Guess This Noise

Car runs fine and quite at first then about 10 minuits or so into the drive it developes a "squeal" in the back tire area. It definently sounds like its a rotating part because it only makes this noise for part of the wheel rotation...it's not a constant noise. Doesn't sound like wheel bearings to high pitched, I took the entire rear tire/hub apart and didn't really find anything glaring. I originally thought a pad was sticking, but they are worn symmetrically. Any ideas?

About the only thing back there that I can think of is:

wheel bearing
break problem or part rubbing (shield or loose bolt)
CV joint

or the elusive muffler bearing!

Muffler bearing. LOL been a while since I replaced that one

But seriously. when I'm driving, if I just depress the brake pedal slightly (the distance until the brake play is gone) the sound goes away. Then I let go and it comes right back. Also cornering really hard gets rid of it too? I'm stumped. I need to go buy a six pack

It's a sqeal so it doesn't sound like a brake problem or a dust shield rubbing. CV joint's usually start cracking when the wheels are turned so I dont think it's that, plus the boots are still fine.

STILL STUMPED?

Does the frequency vary with the speed of the car? Have you looked at the driveshaft? It may be touching something.

Similar

I had a similar noise on my front passenger tire. Turned out that one of the brake sims was slightly bent and was rubbing. Probably would have noticed that though...

Will a broken power steering rack leak?

Im getting a Squeaking noise. Im not sure if its from the front or the back, but the noise only happens when I take off after stopping at a red light or a stop sign then the noise just fades away. The squeaking noise does get louder and faster as I accelerate but evetually it goes away. My power steering was leaking when I got my axles done my mechanic said it was broken, so its been almost 5 months since my mechanic noticed that it was leaking, but after like amonth it stop leaking, cause I havent reffill the PS fluid since like 4months ago. Anyway my
point is, will a broken power steering rack squeak?
Thanks for your help guys

Yeah my first thought was pad rub, possibly a bad mount. I ripped them all off and cleaned with carburator cleaner and sprayed WD40 on them and the pads seemed to move nicely on them. I dont think it's the pad mounts.

Driveshaft. The noise does vary with speed. What are some objects the driveshaft could rub on? It's not hitting the hub or dust shield. I ripped it completly out of the hub, didn't notice anything unusual, but then again, dont really know what to look for when it comes to driveshafts. Any thought?

Dont think power stearing can cause a sqeal, unless it's the pump running dry. Just my thoughts.

Usually the driveshaft rubs on the heat shield, but if you took that out, then I guess its not that. Have you popped off the rear rotors to examine the condition of the ebrake hardware? Maybe something came loose and is rubbing against the rotor?

Yeah completly ripped apart the e-brake. That was another thought I had. I first un-tightened it using the cable adjusters near the handle itself, and that didn't help. Then I ripped apart the ebrake mechanism in the rear and the shoes/rotor looked ok. I did only rip apart one side though. Too lazy.

What do you guy's think of this idea. I was thinking to rule out calipers/pads once an for all, removing the caliper from one side only, put a piece of wood inside the caliper (to act like the rotor so the piston doesn't pop out) and wire it up to my strut just temporarly. does this sound stupid? I'm running out of ideas. It really sounds like pad rub but I've removed and cleaned them twice.

It sounds like your brake pads, since the sound goes away when you apply some pressure to them. Have you tried some Disk Squeal compound on the back of the pads?

Matt

The Disk Squeal stuff is a goo which goes on the back of the pads and glues the pad to the caliper so when it backs off, the pad backs off too. Good luck.
