For anybody with the service manual

Can somebody with the service manual post a ball joint how to? If anybody just knows off the top of their head, feel free to post also. Will I need any special tools (puller?)? Thanks in advance.

Do you really have a bad ball joint?

I did mine when I changed the front axles some time ago. I think it is very easy to change on the SVX.

Jack up the front of the car and support with JACK stands, remove the tire, remove the lower cross bolt that locks the ball joint to the lower part of wheel hub, soak area with PB Blaster or equal, oh wait soak the cross bolt, heck soak all the bolts, you may have to beat on the lower arm to the ball joint to get it out, only then would you remove the 3 bolts that hold it to the lower arm, A screw driver could be used to pry open the slot in the hub that holds the BJ after the cross bolt is removed, that is why you want both wheels off the ground incase you ned ot turn the wheels to get to the slot. You may need new cross bolts or other bolts depending on corrosion condition. It won't change the wheel alignment much but get it checked. You will have to push the lower control arm down and hold it down, the rubber bushings hold it up.

Not sure if the joint is bad...still haven't had time to test it myself. The shop that replaced my CV boot said the ball joint had play in it. I remembered somebody saying it was fairly easy to replace, so I figured I'd do it myself. Thanks for the info!

The best way to test is to jack-up car, support it with stand, remove tire. Then with a pry bar, pry the lower arm away from the steering knuckle. If there is any play, this will show it up. The bushings in the lower arm will tend to keep the lower arm up and with the pry bar used to seperate the joint, the lower arm is pushed down.

Did I say BJ that time?
