Question OBD2? Huh?

Without wishing to give the impression that I'm thicker than a whale omelette, but what the hell is an OBD2 engine? How does it differ from a non-OBD2 one? I keep seeing the term but can't find what OBD2 stands for or what it actually is.

Thanks

The Monzta

Oh this is an easy one OBD2 is an on board diagnostic system made mandatory by the goverment to better controll emissions and make it easier to scan all vehicles, all OBD2 cars have the same diagnostic plug and share the same code numbers, also all OBD2 cars have after cat O2 sensors to monitor the efficiancy of the the cats. Before OBD2 every car maker had there own special plugs and codes and required much more equiptment to diagnose ( some are impossible ie. Volvo, Range Rover) and they didn't monitor cat efficiancy or gas evap controls.

Hope this answers most of your curiosity.

OBDII is the standard used by the automotive industry for the diagnostic trouble codes. started showing up in cars in 1995, i believe. the connector and most of the codes were standardized to make working on cars full o' computers not so much of a nightmare. with your OBDII SVX, you can get an OBDII scanner and pull/clear codes from the port to the lower right of your steering wheel (where the coin holder is on older SVX's.) expensive scanners can look at real time sensor data, log it, etc.

another D'oh! just saw that you are in the UK, so if you have a RHD SVX, then the connector will be to the lower left of the steering wheel, i guess.

Thanks for that guys. So, is this OBD2 thing pertinent only to US spec cars?

ODBII was a US emissions thing. I don't think the UK adopted the same regs (at least not in the mid-90s). The UK and US-spec SVXs may be as similar as two completely dissimilar things in a pod.

Cheers,
Matt

Hmmm, interesting. I shall pose this question on the European Forum to see if any of my fellow countrymen know the answer. I had a quick doublecheck of my car and can see no OBD2 port by the steering wheel.......I have the controls for the heated seats there.
