not svx, but almost a disaster

so i pick up one of my cars last saturday after it had, among other things, an oil change. the fella who works on my cars is trusting, and hard working, he left the car for me outside the shop and went home. it's about 4 p.m. i get on the main road and after about half a block look down and the oil pressure light is on. i look at the pressure gauge, it hasn't moved. i shut her down, check the dip stick. yup, nada. a neighbor of the mechanics sees me and stops. he says he had a hell of a time leaving from the stop sign behind me because he kept spinning his wheels. i get a ride and go to the mechanic's house (before he advanced to the shop he worked from home). i tell him "i know you changed the oil, the only problem is it ain't in the car". i leave the keys and go home, he has the car towed and this time tightens the new filter down. i pick up the car abut 6. a few days later i drop in the shop. i ask him on the bill, please don't don't charge me for double the quarts of oil. of course he's real apologetic. later i'm talking to this young man whom the mechanic hired about two months ago. he tells me "that's never happened to me before, i didn't know with your model car to wrench tighten the filters". the mechanic could have shifted the blame to the young fella, but just assumed the responsibility himself. taught me something about responsibility.

I have always tightened my oil filters by hand. Even then, sometimes it is hard to get them off. I have never hear that about tightening them. I wonder if anyone else has had problems.

I think he was referring to the model of car, not to that specific car.

At least I HOPE so.

You were so very lucky that you caught it when you did, Calmone. I sure hope no permanent damage was done to the engine. Would he still be that responsible if you found out later that it did? I sure hope so for your sake :\

Cool

Was this the car whose name begins with "J"?

Ron.

yup, 10 quarts on the road will tend to cause quite a sippery slope.

Calm by name, calm by nature

Lucky you saw the light before much harm was done.

Similar thing happened us with Ann's Honda Civic. Filter was just loose, and did not dump all the oil, just started leaving black stripes.

Trouble was, the mechanic in question was my brother, who helped me change the oil. The filter is in a difficult place, with the engine canted back. I should have known when he had trouble unscrewing it, that he might not be too strong screwing the new one in.

Anyway, disaster averted, lesson learned.

Joe
