Vibration in reverse

I experienced a symptom yesterday evening that I had never seen before in my SVX.

Since I replaced the tranny, my car has been working great. Last night Amber and I went to the movies (okay, we actually only saw one). When we got in the car to leave, I started it and put it in reverse. I immediately noticed a vibration through my seat. It felt like a rough-running engine does, but the idle was steady. There was no noise associated with the vibration, and reverse seemed to work correctly.

After the car was warmed up, I stopped and put it in reverse again. There was no vibration this time.

Any ideas?

By the way, I have my tranny replacement photos back from development. I'll try to scan 'em today.

When mine was refurbished last Christmas, the tranny tended to be jerky in reverse. I did not notice it myself at first, but Pat, the technician noticed it when test driving. He says some of them do it when rebuilt, it is due to sliding plates binding, something to do with new reverse clutches.

His remedy for it was to drive rapidly in reverse [you need room, and watch for grannies and prams!], apparently the pressure of the hard drive beds it in better. Any excuse for hooliganism!

It seems to have worked. I have a bad neck due to whiplash years ago, so I tend to reverse slowly. I took his advice where appropriate, and it has loosened it up.

Sorry the description may not be technically accurate, but the remedy cured the symptoms.

Thank you very much for your reply, Joe. This transmission, unfortunately, is not a fresh rebuild. It served in another car for 30k miles before I bought it and installed it in mine. So I'm pretty sure that the reverse clutches are broken in thoroughly. Besides, I have driven the car for a week without noticing this problem - it was only after about 300 miles that the problem started happening.

I had want sounds like a similar problem when I purchase my car. When I brought it to the dealer they changed the rear diff fluid and made minor adjustments and I have never had a problem since. Hope that helps a little.

What kind of 'minor adjustments' did they make?

To tell you the truth they never told me but I do know it didnt take them more than hour to do the whole repair. It happened the day after I had purchased it so they covered it out of good faith. I didnt cost me anything and the bill just said the fluid had been replaced and that they that they had made adjustments. Sorry I couldnt be more specific.

I can tell you that the transmission functioned perfectly while in my car.
