Not the struts, we want to see Porter covered in oil

Yeah, I know. Sadly, that's the one I missed. Take another look at this pic. What's about to happen? Keep in mind fluid runs downhill, and that sucker is under pressure. Porter, what were you thinking??

Sorry guys, I failed you on the picture that should have come next.

tire decision

We found a really good price on the Azenis and they'll pay shipping, so the total for the set will come to only $392 delivered to my door.

We'll run that slightly weird size, because I don't think I can resist the grip. We need to use the stock wheels for budget purposes, so we'll have to go to a 215/45-16. Slightly narrower, slightly smaller in dia. Should give us a little better acceleration without compromising too much on the tread patch. They might look a little weird.

For a driver I'd probably rather the 225/45ZR17 (or even the 245's ), but then we'd have to buy wheels. There is no way- we have about $4.60 left in the budget!!

roll cage

I think the roll cage is about to get nixed. It is not required, and it will only add back weight. The only 2 things it is offering are a mounting point for the seatbelt (which we can solve), and an increase in cool factor.

We are so tight on the budget, the salvaged piping we have may even push us over the limit.

We may still consider a roll bar.

We will probably settle on only shock tower reinforcement.

Perhaps we'll build the cage for the fun of it and maybe install it sometime in the future!

Can't say I'd mind seeing that, but I'm surprised to hear you say it!

Hahah,

All the other ones I've done on SVXes had blown struts! I never had the fountain effect before. I just wasn't thinking... the result had a high humor quotient though!

Well, we're down to the final 2 weeks.

Some of our dreams have given in to reality- out of time, out of budget, can't get people to be more involved. Some of the compromises have not been fun. We've made decisions differently than if the car was a road car.

The project has been largely focused on a few areas- the autocross has always been our main effort, so suspension, tires, acceleration, braking, and cornering were our goals.

The suspension is done, though still being tweaked. She got the full Koni/ Ground Control treatment, but the top mounts put us over the budget, so we are pulling them back off and putting back the originals- cleaned up and greased as best as possible. She also got some crude but very effective strut tower reinforcing.

Tires were a must, she got Falken Azenis Sports, but we had to use the stock rims because of the budget. This left us with a weird size- 215/45ZR16's. They grip great and offer improved acceleration, but don't give us the look we'd hoped for. We may drop the car a little more to help compensate.

We managed a set of metallic pads, but only for the front. We also reinforced the hoses with zip ties (believe it or not) for a firmer pedal. New fluid and adjustments are due this weekend.

The roll cage has been eliminated- too much weight, no budget left, no time left. The desired race seat was too much, so she's got the passenger seat mounted on the driver's side (it's lighter) with a used 5-point racing harness.

She's 700 lbs lighter than stock- not too pretty, but serious acceleration improvements.

The appearance package suffered a bit- a full paint job gave way to a flat black spray job on the roof and hood only. She's still waiting for her final detailing and decals, etc. The lexan sunroof is being installed this weekend, as well as the re-mounting of the side glass (now fixed).

Engine performance was always limited to minor tweaks. An underdrive pulley, improved air intake, changed the oil to Castrol Syntech, no AC drive anymore, no cats, straight pipe resonator. While in there, a couple of oil leaks were fixed to help get us through the tech inspection (wow, those valve cover gaskets are a pain!)

The final big addition is a 75 hp Zex shot of laughing gas. That will go in this weekend. I may also play a couple of tricks with the transmission control solenoids.

We'll spend next weekend fine tuning, adjusting, final weighing and balancing, and final detailing. We'll also have to clean out my trailer!!

Then its off to Gainesville!!

I can't wait!

I'll get some pics up this weekend.

Sounds nice... can't wait to see how it does in the challenge, and the acceleration should be pretty good with 700lbs less weight to drag around . I'm a big fan of GRM, and spend more time on their message board than I do here. Some day I'll build a challenge car of my own... for now I'll just look forward to seeing a SVX in an upcoming issue.

I've just discovered their message board- pretty good. I'm enjoying it a lot.

Now, if I could just get some work done...

At 700 lbs lighter, that car is going to be impressive. If I just ratio the stock acceleration stats by 2900/3600, I get a 1/4 mi time of less than 13 sec and a 0-60 of less than 6 seconds. What exactly did you remove to get 700 lbs off the car?
