The Right Radiator and How to Replace Valve Covers?

So the Radiator is leaking...I also want to replace the hoses- I have three links below that I will call on tomorrow. Anyone have any advice? Also- the valve cover gaskets are leaking (that house the lifters?) My buddy says we can fix the valve covers in one day- are there any how tos online or a Chiltons manual you would recommend? How about replacing the radiator- should I do that myself? They also said that the water pump might be bad... They quoted me like $2500 for all this work which seems like a lot. Can I do it myself?

Re: The Right Radiator and How to Replace Valve Covers?

I bought an Ebay rad. It's a beautiful Chinese copy for $133.00, works and fits great. I bought OEM hoses. Replacing the rad is a simple job.
$2,500.00 is way too much.

Re: The Right Radiator and How to Replace Valve Covers?

Replacing the rad is pretty easy in the SVX.

1. Jack up the car, secure on jackstands, remove under engine cover.

2. Open the drain on the rad and drain the old coolant into some container. It helps to remove the rad cap to let air get in and speed things up.

3. Pull off upper rad hose while you're waiting. Once draining has stopped go underneath and remove lower rad hose. Unplug transmission cooler lines from the rad and stick a couple bolts into them to keep the fluid from leaking out.

4. Unplug fans.

5. Remove the two top mounting brackets that hold the rad.

6. Lift the rad out of the car.

Swap the fans onto the new rad while it's out of the car, then plunk the new one in place. Something I like to do is remove the thermostat and stick a hose into the upper hose to backflush the engine. Let it run till it's good clear water coming out. Remember to use a new thermostat gasket when you put it back in. Fill up the rad with new coolant and bleed all the air out of the system and you should be good to go.

Changing the water pump requires removing the timing belt and all the fun involved with that.
