Chiketkd,

I'm a bit confused.
Did you get rid of your red SVX?

It was the name of the Hobgoblin in the Spiderman comics.

Nothing to chime in, except nice car! Now that the WRX and STi have the same displacement, do both cars have the same general performance potential, i.e., is the power difference between the two models something simple like more boost or a bigger turbo?

STi gets bigger turbo (along with different ECU programming), different intercooler, sodium-filled valves, and a less restrictive exhaust. i may have forgotten something, though.

Alan, Alan, Alan. Its exactly the same except the bigger rear wing on the STI (remember subaru changed it from STi for this year) adds the extra ponies.

The *potential* is essentially the same b/c building a WRX/STI for high boost will require a tear down to install stronger piston, freer flowing heads, etc.

I'm going to steadily build my car up over the next 2-3 years to be an upper 12 second daily driven ride. I don't want driveability or practicality to be sacrified in any way though...

but there is more to be had from the STI before a teardown is needed. the bigger turbo/intercooler allows much bigger gains over the WRX with a DP and a reflash.

the WRX doesn't have much room to expand before the turbo neeeds changed out. it will just approach stock STI power, and slightly exceed its torque, at "stage2".

Cool

Nice purchase, Chike, but those weird normal windows must give you fits.

Back to the greasy stuff. With the historical perspective that I've accumulated over way too much history, I have this feeling we've all been over-hyped on the subject of lubrication. Nothing scientific follows.......

I've taken three cars over 230K, all on dino fluids (usually Penzoil) with no ruined parts ever. All cars were bought used, so gawd knows how they were broken in, or simply broken. The first was a '70 Olds 350 V8. The second an '87 Chrysler turbo. The third, my present '93 Nissan 240SX (250K as of last week). I usually did the oil changes myself between 3 & 7K on average. The filters were what was on sale at the time. None of the cars "burned" oil at the time I released them to the suck.. er, buyers lucky enough to have a pre-owned Ron-mobile. I've used Mobile One in the SVX for the last 40K, because it's chic to do so, & I can check the clarity of the oil on the garage floor, 'cause it leaks through the cam seals nicely. My guess is it's not the dino vs. synthetic issue, but the regular flushing of contaminents, & metal stuff that keeps the engine happy.
I suppose if you're mashing the pedal at every opportunity, you're engine longevity may vary, but for the commuter masses, any box o' slippery stuff'll do.

Ron (uses drained oil as a hair grooming product).

You're an amazing guy Ron!

I do miss my ol' lady in red, however, the WRX is definitely starting to grow on me - quickly!!!!! I'm still getting used to all of the Impreza quirks such as wind noise above 65+mph and a slight rattle from the glove box over bumpy roads.

However, with that said, I bought a mid 20's performance car that one owner has already gone 13.8 seconds in stock form on 91 octane (in AZ). As she has over 2,500 miles (and will pass 3,000 this weekend after my trip to Tom's place in Cumberland), I'm looking forward to opening her up more and more!

The turbo really gives the car a second nature. The 2.5L even off-boost is still quite torquey, but dip into the throttle and the turbo really pushes you back in your seat!

My 94 Impreza had none of those quirks. Take it back and have the windows adjusted properly. My wife's Legacy has already been in twice now to have windows adjusted right. As for the rattle that definately shouldn't be there.
