Front axle shaft

Hello forum,

I'm new here. My '93 SVX makes weird noises when I heavy turn left or right. It sounds like a machine gun. My garage says I have to replace both front axle shafts. But they seems no longer available at Subaru. You can find many of those on ebay like that:
https://www.ebay.ch/itm/Pair-of-Fron...EAAOSwb6dZyfiD

Is it save to buy from an offer like this, or anyone knows a better vendor?

Did already someone of you replace the axle shaft on his SVX?

Thank you for your help!

Re: Front axle shaft

If it is coming from the splines which connect to the differential you can replace just the splines. They are the same as some other Subaru's of the era.

Are you sure it's not the all wheel drive clutches binding?

Re: Front axle shaft

Thank you for the answer. I don't understand the details of car parts. I have to trust my mechanic. He is the mechanic since about 15 years and I'm always satisfied with his work. It might be important to know that my SVX has already 250'000 Km on it.

Re: Front axle shaft

I have replaced quite a few. I usually buy used OEM Subaru axles. They are green. They're getting hard to find though.

Have you considered having yours rebuilt?

The ones you have the link to will work but are low quality made in China axles. They will probably be fine for a couple of years. Typically the low grade rubber CV boots will crack allowing dirt to enter and ultimately destroy the joint.

Is your car FWD or AWD? Make sure you get the correct ones.

Your car must be very rare in Switzerland. Enjoy it!

Re: Front axle shaft

It's a AWD. There was no FWD version in Switzerland.
Yes they are rar, but not that rare compared to other countries. Once there were 950 cars delivered to us but only 850 to Germany for example.

My dad has an SVX too. A 1997 with just 50'000 Km!
