There actually was some discussion to see if they could be made from blown glass, so that's what I thought you were referring to.

hmmm...those would be interesting looking

OK! OK! OK!

BUT............Did anyone ever GET the German glass assemblies, and how much did they cost? And what were the part numbers? And how long did it take to get them? And did anyone check out the auto recycling market in Germany for junkers?

The 3M cleaner is coming, I ordered it today. But trying out locally available cleaners (not 3M) did "jack." I need light - I start out for a 56 mile ride over twisties at 4:45 am.

Is this as big a problem for everybody as the threads seem to suggest?

Guys

I got to tell you something. I am a perfectionist when it comes to electrical and lights on my car. I hate to say it out this way. You can try all the cleaners you want, you can NOT get all the chips out of the lights unless you try the wetsanding method. You can not just wetsand it outside alone. You have to open it up and clean the inside as well. Put it this way, your interior lights for a 92 car are 11 years old (they were made in 91). They have 11 years worth of grease from the engine interior (regardless of how much you clean your engine bay). Also, your glass blob (lense) would be chipped on the outsides by now. I can bet you money on that. If you drive your car daily, your lense will be chipped on the outside. Period. Bad assambly issue from FHI. You should take care of it too. If you do interior and exterior cleaning/polishing, your lights will be cleaner and brighter. They lasts for about 6 months under extreme condition. I think that's the best solution I can think of now.

There were no glass shards in there when I did mine. When Chris (SVXMAN2001) and I did his headlights, we ended up with a huge pile of glass shards. What could the reasoning of this be? My car has quite a bit more miles than Chris's.

Glass shards are products of glass(lens) breaking apart. The reason why it does that is because the lens is held in place by 2 metal brackets. Metal + glass and bumps means that the glass will break. Go though the howto and I'd recommand that all cars have the glass lens protection preformed. The more the lens breaks up, the more the beam pattern will change. Just use some silicone to soften the impect between the glass and the metal brackets.

Any idea though why there were no glass shards in mine (with 127,000 miles) but there were a TON in chris's with 90,000 miles?

Does anyone know of a car with a SIMILAR LENSE... just the clear outside part, or a car that we could cut up the lense to mate it to our existing headlights? See, I figure if you take out your current headlights, rip everything out of them so you just have a bare skeleton, you could mold in some PIAA driving lights or something and install a foglight for low beams. Then you'd just have to find a quasi scratch resistant lense, and plexiglass definitely ain't it. :| Anyone have a really beat up set they'd sell me for cheap?

Wet Sanding?

"You can try all the cleaners you want, you can NOT get all the chips out of the lights unless you try the wetsanding method. You can not just wetsand it outside alone. You have to open it up and clean the inside as well."

Please explain "wet sanding." All I can imagine is scratched plastic lenses and distorted light pattern as a result. Help!

I've tried amost every lense on the market. SVX has a thin wide light. Hard to fit anything else. Also the semi-wrap around design on the side does not help.

I was thinking a beretta lense looked kinda the same shape... hrm.. >shrug<

WTF do they make the lense out of? Maybe we could just buy some. Plexiglass is too soft though.

Polycarbonate is the material. See here for more than you ever want to know about it. http://www.psrc.usm.edu/macrog/pc.htm

You can buy it in sheets. Have fun trying to shape it if you can't get stamp it into shape while molten.

the reason they yellow is dirt and heat. The headlamps make the material hot and slightly softer and the road rash (sand, stones, dust) actually embed themselves into it. Then it cools down when you turn off the lights and it hardens with the debris in it.

When you go to a meet, if they haven't cleaned the yellowing off, you can easily spot who leaves their headlights (and fog lights) on all the time and who doesn't.

A simple solution is to continually wax your headlights (after throughly cleaning). that will prevent a lot of the dirt from getting embedded in the lens in the first place.
