Headlight/MPG thread
Alright, now that the day of headlights has passed, let's get back into this: Does driving with your lights on lower your mpg? I say yes. To have lights, you must use the alternator. The more accessories you have, the more your engine has to work.
Any arguements? - Ca$h |

Following that philosophy, just think how your mileage goes up when you don't turn the engine on.

If the engine isn't on you don't get any miles though. :P

There's almost always a down side.

It would but it would be very miniscule..
I read a report a while ago by some agency here in Canada about daytime running lights that said that extra gas consumption for a year on average due to the DRL for a car worked out to be about 1 gallon/year. |

Why on earth do you want to bring this up again. I was hoping that you let things die. Leave things alone please.

They do help other people see you, resulting in a lower rate of accident in shady areas of the road. You can't use gas when the car isnt running.

The short answer would be yes. Of course your headlights are a drain on the alternator.
But the actual numbers are probably insignificant. I'll keep driving with my lights on. I don't think we've actually touched the headlight controls on any of our Subarus in many months. At any rate, this reads like a thread that should be in the Tech Q&A forum.
