2005 Legacy

A friend at work just got his Legacy 2.5GT. What a nice car - it really seems like Subaru has upped its game with this one.

And it feels way too fast for a Legacy.

The interior has little of the cheapness of most newer cars. I still think that Japanese interiors tend to be nicer than American interiors, but all have taken a turn for the worse in the past several years.

The interior styling is very nice, but what's with stylists separating the doors from the dash again? We had nice, rounded features for awhile with dash styling flowing down to the doors. Now we have right angles again. I wonder if that's to help the interior space feel more expansive.

The doors make the most satisfying, soft thump when closed.

The hood feels really light.

They covered the entire engine with a single piece of plastic about a yard long.

My friend didn't opt for leather...pity.

I haven't driven it, so I can't tell you how it feels to drive. But as a passenger I can tell you that the car feels well-sorted. It doesn't roll around on its suspension a lot.

It's a manual - does anybody know if this car has a mechanical center diff or a viscous coupling?

I really want one....Though the plastic engine covers make me angry. They serve no purpose and IMO the boxer looks much sexier than any cover they can put there. The SVX has one, but it is small and doesn't cover the whole motor.

I would imagine that it would be the viscous coupling. The 5mt in the new leg is just a beefed up (so I hear) version of past models. For the most part, it is the same. This is the 5mt that I would want in my SVX.

Tell your friend to get the STi short shifter for it. I have heard nothing but good things about it. Makes shifting much more enjoyable.

He actually got the short-throw shifter.

As for the cover, remember that the whole engine bay on the SVX was styled extensively. They aren't doing that any more, so they just cover it.

Straight from the brochure, the answer is: viscous.

I have driven one, and I love it. I want my wife to get one, but she still wants an Outback, because it's higher. Damned inferiority complex.

OB

Nick,

See my posts about the 2005 OB wagons in the Not Exactly SVX Forum.
I sat in the 2005 Legacy GT Ltd. wagon at the dealership. It is basically the same car as the OB XT Ltd. wagon, except it was lower on its suspension.

The OB XT Ltd wagon loaded has a window sticker price of around $32, 500. You can get on right now for about $29,500-$30,000. Volvo's Outback wagon is called the X70 CrossCountry. Its sticker price is about $43,000- loaded. I test drove it.
It is a little roomier than the Suby, but does not go, handle, or stop half as well. The interiors of both the Suby and Volvo wagons are equally luxurious. However, the huge sun roof in the OB is much nicer than the one in the Volvo. The only drawback to the huge sun roof in the SUby is that the top of my head gets hot. (no bald jokes please). When I get the OB, I'm going to have that sun roof tinted.

You've already got a thread about the Outback, Larry. I saw it. Why'd you have to go and hijack my thread?

Anyway, I drove the Legacy GT sedan in question today. Damn fine car. It seems that Subaru makes the Legacy's steering progressively heavier on each Legacy generation.

I was surprised by how much torque it had at the low end.

As was I. Does not feel like a turbo four one bit. These 2.5 turbos rock!

Nick,

Didn't mean the hijack your thread. I just think that the OB is a Legacy with a jacked up suspension. I too was quite surprised by the amount of low end torque.

I was just joking with you, Larry.

Yes, the Legacy and Outback share a lot in common - they're based on the same platform. But the Outback became its own model several years ago and now it's more than just a raised Legacy.

You sure hit the nail on the head there! The 4.44 gears on one particular '96 Outback 4EAT have been dancing in my head non-stop for the last 3 weeks!

Outbacks are much different in so many aspects from the Legacy!

Not in the least. As you can see I own one! I just think the new sedan is showing subaru's lack of independence in design as aside from the grill it looks no different than a Mazda 6. If you look back over Mazda's designs they are definately not a timeless design (aside from possibly the MX6). The 626, 323, Protege, etc. The design is so dated by the time the car is paid off that no one wants them (i.e. very poor resale values). The wagon looks a good deal better but as far as everyone thinking that the materials used are of a much higher qualilty than the previous Legacy I just don't see it. The leather in the new model looks as if it was pulled from an Exploder and the overall appearance of the interior lacks a cohesive feel. Not as a bad as the Forester's Audi TT meets Chevy Corsica interior but not much better either.

In short, in 3 years the car will need to be replaced simply because it is a copy of a design that came out 3 years ago!
