My first car was a 1966 VW Bus- Yup, the hippie van. It only had 3 wheels when I bought it- it had hit a curb and tore up the transaxle. Thankfully, it came with a book "How to Fix a Volkswagen for the Complete Idiot". Paid $25 for it, towed it home, and 4 months later was crusin around in a 36 hp monster that did 0-60 in about an hour and a half. Complete with peace sign on the front.
Over the next few years I went through 13 V-Dubs, none of which I paid more than $125 for. When they broke, I'd take them to the junk yard and get my money back and buy another one. I had 25 years of driving experience before I could afford a "real" car. While I may have bought my SVXii inexpensively, I have since spent way too much on them, like everyone else on this forum. And loved every minute of it!

It'd be even funnier if it wasn't absolutely, 100% true!

...grand... That's absurd. I'd never pay that much to insure a car. There's just no value in that.

I couldn't pay that much as well... I would just have to sell the car and get something cheaper. I mean that works out to $667/mo - that's a car payment for a 30K Lexus/Infiniti!!!

Bet he was paying over 16K/yr to insure that car! Honestly, if my parents bought me a car like that at age 16, that would have been like signing my death certificate...
That's total irresponsibility...a kid with less than 1 yr of driving experience, driving a turbo'd RWD car with more power than a new Viper SRT-10! -Chike Quote:

A 16 year old with that much hp is STUPID. My son's friend wants a Z06 and he is only 17, so to make my point I let my 12 year old son drive my SVX on an empty parking lot, 1st gear only. He drove it around a little then I had him mash the gas and then let off. He is very intuned with the SVX sence he has done a lot of the engine work on it with me. He now agrees that a Z06 is to much car for a rokie drive.
By the way my son is in love with the SVX even more now that he got to drive it a little. I also trust my son very much considering I let him drive the car with out me in it. Steve P.S. I pay $750.00 a year for full coverage on my SVX. It is the only car I have too.

A Z06 at 17 would be just plain dumb. Whatever happened to the ol' rust buckets high school kids used to drive? Remember the Archie comics - and that ol' piece of crap he drove?

My dad took me out driving when I was like 14 in his Honda Accord. He taught me a lot in those parking lot drives - and most of those lessons have stuck to this day!
I plan to do the same with my son when he's older... -Chike Quote:

I barely drove until I was 15 and had my temps. Once I had my driver's license, I drove my mom's manual for the first time. My dad and I took the car to a back road and practiced stops, shifting, starts, and hill starts. What a disaster. I remember the first time I was at a stoplight, with what seemed to be a million cars behind me... choked it off twice! Those were the days. In fact, today, I saw a kid learning manual and he didn't look too happy. Good times.

I did tons of auto runs when I was a kid.... we had a long private drive and I got to drive lots.
My dad swore that both us girls would learn to drive manual on his old rundown pickup. Well.... it never really happened. My first manual experience was on my hubby's (then future hubby) pickup. I did great.... downshifted to slow and everything. (I understand conceptually). Didn't do very well on grades. And, I didn't feel really comfortable in the driver's seat. I'm only 5' and no 6-way adjustment. The true test came one day when I came home from college... went to the mall where he worked to wait for his shift to be over, and realized I locked my keys in my car. I knew that my dad kept spares to all the cars at his workshop, so I decided I needed to drive the truck there to get them. I planned my trip so that I wouldn't have to do any hill starts. It was rush hour. I did great! To the shop and back (btw, there were no spare keys to my car), until I got back to the parking lot... killed it.... not in low enough gear. But I was proud of myself. Can I drive a stick? Yes, because I know the basics. Can I drive a stick well? No, cause I haven't even tried in years. What will I do if my tranny goes again? Put in a 6 speed and learn by necessity
