Neons + WRX boards

i'm not trying to offend anyone here on this board, but i was looking for 2.5RS sales boards and somehow found this thread.

this is for humor only. this thread went up to about 4-5 pages and i thought some members here MAY get a kick out of it. NOT TO START A FLAME WAR.

funny how other car clubs perceive neons:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
topic: SRT4 kid owned by my lil sis
I was with my lil sis (20) and a couple of her cutie friends. We were in my car and I pulled up to a stoplight. a kid in a yellow SRT4 rolled up next to me and started poppin his BOV off at me. My lil sis rolls down the window and says "nice neon you faggot" If I wasn't buckled in I would've rolled out of my seat I was laughing so hard.

I proceeded to explain to her that the SRT4 is a badass car but her and her friends said "who cares its still a neon"

It was pretty damn funny... The kid in the SRT4 looked like he was going to cry. He then of course had to do a peg leg burnout when the light turned green to reclaim his manliness.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a bit immature, but kind of funny.

Neons are like Rodney Dangerfield; they don't get no respect....

despite the fact that they're one of the best handling FWD cars ever made, cost nothing to buy or own, and are pretty torquey little cars. I like them that way. It pisses people off more when they get beaten by them.

Muha.

doing an engine replacement doesn't count. i could replace the SVX engine with a 500hp modded STi 2.5L. is it still an SVX?

how fast is the stock Neon? i found these specs:

0 - 60 mph / 0 - 100 km/h 10.2 sec
0 - 1/4 miles 28.0 sec
Top Speed 120 mph / 192 km/h

you'll probably say "that's for the new, slow Neon, etc., etc."
ok, shave an entire 2 sec off 0-60------> you're still looking at 8.2 sec. that's still VERY slow and boring in my book, i don't care how it handles.

The slower something is, the more it feels like it 'handles well.' I'm serious.

Look, we've been over and over the Neon subject many times before. I'm not trying to start something. But do you have any data to back up your claim that the Neon is in fact 'one of the best-handling FWD cars ever made,' or is this just your subjective opinion?

they probably do handle well, but i'm sure a Geo Storm would, too, or any number of crappy lightweight little cars. unfortunately we have to have the Neon rammed down our throats all the time. well, i guess Rob really didn't START this thead.......thanks a lot, Noir!!!

Yep. I forget which mag did it, but they threw some race slicks on a STOCK acr neon (first gen) and it pulled OVER 1g on the skidpad. STOCK. With race tires.

Also, look at autocross events. See what cars usually end up kicking some ass. Here's an example.

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=150659

Look at the types of cars the neon beat.

Incredible!

how about other cars with race tires on the skidpad? data?
a good driver can beat "better" cars in a "crappy" car. proves nothing other than someone is a good driver. some guy in a somewhat modified 928 beat some Porsche factory RSR racecars. better car? no, better driver.

I went to an autocross yesterday. It was a division championship event, so I was advised not to enter as a novice because they wouldn't have time for me. Far fewer cars turned out than they expected, so I would have been able to run, I found out. Crap.

Anyway, as I said, this was a championship event. There was only one Neon, and I didn't see it run. The class of the field yesterday was a pack of three mid-80s Mustangs, which I never would have expected to see. Those things were beasts, though.

Other than the Mustangs, I saw MR2s, Porsches, Civics, a BMW 3-series sedan and one very quick Evo.

I wish I'd run yesterday...

I wasn't talking about engine swaps. Swapping in a 2.4 nets you high 13s, but STOCK neons are fast.

Quote:

It depends if you're talking a stock AUTOMATIC neon, or a stock 5spd, which engine, which transmission. All of the newer neons (00 and up) are slow (excluding the SRT4 of course).

yep. That's for the automatic 2nd gen neon. Here is a review of a 1998 Neon R/T from CAR AND DRIVER MAGAZINE.

http://neon.atsweb.net/Dodge_Neon_RT.html

Notice the 7.5 second 0-60 times. That's in SVX territory, easily. The skidpad on this car is pretty blah, but thats because its an R/T and not an ACR. And before you tell me that the R/T is faster than the rest of them, let me refute. The R/T shares the exact same engine (DOHC) as regular neon, the exact same transmission/suspension as the Sport Coupes/Expressos.

But yeah, once again:

heheh. Always a pleasure educating the anti neon crowd.

I certainly wouldn't place myself in the anti-Neon category. I just don't see anything special about them, other than they've received a little attention. As far as I'm concerned, they're run-of-the-mill economy cars. Some people have driven them successfully and some have modofied them successfully. But, (again, as far as I'm concerned) that doesn't make the car anything special.

And, as has been said before, the driver has everything to do with it.

Not 1g to the driver, but to the parts flying off
