Ok to go with mix old version of Continental Extremecontact with new?

I have a set of Continental Extremecontact 225/50 R16 91v on my '96. 3 of the 4 are in great shape, the fourth (passenger rear) must have been running low for a while and needs to be replaced.

Unfortunately, this model has been replaced by Extremecontact DWS and DW.

I don't think it's OK to mix tires on a 4WD even if they are the same dimension/make - or is it?

Ideally, I'd like to find another Continental Extremecontact 225/50 R16 91v and not worry about mixing tires - anyone know there one might be? I tried Tire Rack, local tire dealers etc.... no luck!

Re: Ok to go with mix old version of Continental Extremecontact with new?

I used to use Continental Extreme Contacts on my Impreza.
They made good all year tires.

When I went to buy tires for my SVX last spring, I was told they are replaced the extreme contact with the DWS.
At that point there was a 3month back order on them, so I just bought a set of summer tires.

If anyone is running the DWS, how are they compared to the old extreme contacts? I know they are sporting a new tread pattern.

The circumference of all four tires should be within ¼" of each other. This would mean you would need to shave the new tire you mix in.
I got lucky and found 2 tires locally second hand one time that were within the ¼" margin.

I tend to replace my tyres two at a time. Either both front or both back. It doesn't cause me any problems.

Re: Ok to go with mix old version of Continental Extremecontact with new?

There are a few places on eBay that sell used tires or one offs. Depending on your existing tread depth you may find some at a high end car dealer. The local Jag, Porsche dealer here routinely take off tires at 5/32 depth which is roughly 1/2 life of the tire, 3/32 is the legal minimum to pass inspection here. That tire is OEM fitment on Jags and Mercedes.

Tire Rack will shave tires you buy from them, and they sell Continental tires. As long as the new tread pattern isn't radically different, the rolling diameter is the important factor.

Tread Patterns:

Old School Extreme contacts:

New DWS:

I used to love the footprints left by my old extreme contacts, it left sexy tracks.
I don't really care for the look of the new ones

i've had no luck finding an old school Extremecontact.

Maybe it's time to bite the bullet and go with 4 new skins...

Have you tried contacting the area rep for Continental? He/she should be able to check inventory at various distributor ware houses and arrange delivery if they find one.

Failing that I wouldn't hesitate to buy only 2. Just put the new ones on the rear.

I have the DWS on my S8. They are one of the best tires i've ever had. Fantastic in wet and dry, and even usable in light to moderate snow.

Cool good to know. I may get a set next year after I kill the summer tires.

Old conti extreme footprints, I loved the old tracks...

Got a pic of what the DWS footprints look like?

This is awful news. I still have my set and love them. Good luck with finding another set.

Tim-

I had the original contiextremes on one of my older SVXs. The DWS are superior. It's not awful!

Biggest problem with the DWS and summer version is they aren't channel and tram on uneven pavement lines in the road once you get into the wider series. I chose the new Kuhmo LEs over the Contis for my 255s. Should be in this week at the tune of $800 or so installed. At least I get a hundred back. Conti wanted to give me a stinking flip video.
