Re: 1995 Brilliand Red SVX L

Just put in a new 110amp alternator and larger wire. Hopefully I can bring it home tomorrow. It stalls as soon as you put it in drive, and I didnt have enough time to look into it. I'm hoping it just needs to relearn idle...

Re: 1995 Brilliand Red SVX L

So can't figure out why it keeps stalling out once I put it into drive... Reverse works fine though. I did rev it a bit and slide into drive to get it moving but once the rpms drop it just stalls out again. I have no idea what would cause this. Also, just like the old alternator the new one gets VERY hot. Anyone have any ideas?

Did the self diagnosis and came up with Engine Code 38. Which is a short between the TCU and the ECU. Not really sure how to find it...

Have you let it warm up before putting it in drive? I had that problem after I let mine sit a few months in the winter. After I drove it a few days in a row the problem disappeared. Letting the trans warm up by a long idle helped.

Yeah,
1. Turn your car off
2. Take your battery out
3. Have it towed to an automotive electrical shop.
4. Get out the KY jelly.

Under no circumstances should you drive the car, attempt to start the car, listen to the radio in the car until your electrical short has been sorted. Judging from your posts I think this may be something which is beyond your current abilities and if not sorted properly can result in some very nasty things.

Re: 1995 Brilliand Red SVX L

Alright guys, I'm helping Joe with his SVX at the moment. We took the TCU out yesterday to inspect what could be wrong with it. We found one of the varistors in the TCU blew. The varistor that blew on the TCU acts as surge protection for the unit as a whole. I think this surge had to do with the alternator causing over-voltage.

I read into alternator problems with the SVX on the this site and there seems to be a voltage regulator for the alternator. If the voltage regulator fails, then the alternator has the potential to deliver up to 17-18 volts to the circuits. This in turn messed up relays and blows fuses.

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...&highlight=tcu

The fuses on the dash and stereo were blown when Joe bought the car. We replaced the fuses, along with the alternator and the fuses blew again. The alternator currently is connected straight to the positive battery terminal with a fusible link and 4 AWG wire and the original wires were cut and capped together, but I haven't looked yet to see where this voltage regulator would be for the alternator.

Anyone else might know where this voltage regulator is?

Re: 1995 Brilliand Red SVX L

From one of the service manual diagrams, it looks like it's inside the alternator.

Re: 1995 Brilliand Red SVX L

Ok, I see. So knowing that, I think we'll have to start looking at the alternator wires for corrosion. I also need to check and see if Joe added the necessary larger ground wires too.
