Baja prices

From time to time I very casually browse online for a Subaru Baja, thinking The One ('05-6, single color, 5-speed manual, bed extender, <100,000 miles) might someday fall into my price range. This may take awhile. Last look there was a black '06 with <40,000 miles leading the list, with an asking price of almost twenty grand. Wow.

Obviously I'm way out of touch with used car prices, but what did these things cost new?

Interesting reading some of these descriptions. "Crew cab." "Bedliner."

Re: Baja prices

I paid 23k + tax for mine brand new. 06 Silver non turbo and 5 speed.

The prices of them were on a fast nose dive before the gas prices went crazy awhile back and they took a sharp turn up and now the value is very slowly going down. Right now mine has a KBB private party value of 16,535 and that is with 48k on it. Back about 2 years ago this figure with less miles was in the high 12k. My retail value on KBB is just over 20k and to be honest with you I love it so much I wouldn't let it go for anything under that figure. It is a prime example of the old saying "jack of all trades, master of none"

The last car show I was at with it I had many people make favorable coments about it while it was parked beside and old Brat.

The very first Baja came off the the assembly line on July 19, 2002. It was a yellow Baja Classic with a VIN ending on 00058.

Driven to the 10th Anniversary dinner by Mr Nagano, the President and CEO of SIA. We were the first non-SIA people to preview the actual car.

The Baja Classic reached the dealerships in early August, 2003 with a MSRP of $24,520. Six months later, the Baja Sport was released for $2,000 less.

Re: Baja prices

I've made a standing offer for my Mom's Baja when it reaches $4K in the KBB. With over 100K miles, it'll still be a while before I get my hands on it. Last I checked it was still worth over $8K. I'm amazed how well they've been holding value compared to Subaru's past "unique creations". It's a non-turbo with an automatic, so it's a little slow for my taste, but I still love it. Maybe it just needs an EG33 swap.

Re: Baja prices

They're really great cars. I was working for a Subaru dealer when they were new, and we couldn't get enough of them. Every single one that came in sold the next day, and we were getting them from other dealers all the time. Subaru should have continued making them.

Re: Baja prices

I still think they should make a Forester SUT.

Forester is more "truck" looking than Outback.

Strengthen the chassis and drivetrain (with cooling) to tow Class III 500/5000lb trailers.

Offer it with Tribeca or STI brakes/hubs, 5x114.3 wheel fitment standard.

Offer it with H4, EZ-H6, and Turbo-diesel boxer engine choices... with an STI Special edition with H4 Turbo, as a limited-quantity sport truck.

Legacy Spec.B/WRX STI 6MT Gearbox, or 5EAT with robust updates for VTD or DCCD AWD, and front and rear limited slips. Maybe 4EAT/economical 6MT for the base 4-cylinder model.

Option the interior from rubber-floor and water-tolerant upholstery, up to leather at the top end.

H6 and diesel should have plenty of latent torque to make a little truck like that work well. The Turbo H4 would be a rally-machine homologation from day 1.

Apply all these changes to both SUV and SUT body-styles of the Forester.

IF done right... watch how fast they sell...

But that has about as much likelyhood from current Subaru as my idea for a sport coupe between the GR Impreza's chassis size with 2009 Legacy trim lines for features, with H4, H4 Turbo, and 300+hp H6 and manual gearbox performance with brembos and bilsteins. Similarly ranging from a simple coupe at the bottom, to a turbo fire-breather, to an H6-based successor to the SVX as a Grand Touring coupe.

I've often thought the same about a "Beach Brat," with a hose-it-down interior, standard ski/bike/kayak mounting gear, a return to the dual-range, on-the-fly 4WD gearbox and functional engine skidplate, small trailer-towing and winch-mounting capability (and NO plastic body cladding, wastepaper basket-sized fog lamps, silly geographic place name badging, or any of the like). And here's an idea: ADVERTISE the thing.

If only SOA would return my calls...

They almost were brought to the states until the demise of GM and the planned cancellation of Pontiac. It is the same chassis as the Pontiac G8, Chevy Camaro, etc. They even had it advertised and had a public voting/name decision on it. It was all finalized but then bam, GM went to crap. I was looking forward to it but oh well.
Engine choices were going to be of 2 V8s and either a 5 speed auto or 6 speed manual.

Nah, man, not for me. I'm interested in an economical grandkid/grass seed/fertilizer/fence post/trash-to-the-recycling-station hauler. No V8s, body kits, wings.
