Purpose of copper plate in MAF ??
During my recent debacle in Reno, I removed my MAF to check the solder connections inside to eliminate that possibility. During inspection, since I didnt have a soldering iron, I simply gently bent back the thin copper plate inside to check the solder connections on the board. It was only soldered on one side and didnt seem to be connected to anything besides the two or three soldering pionts connecting it to that one side. My car made it home fine, but now when I drive it again it has been acting weird, giving inconsistent power when accelerating. The ECU threw a code for the MAF (23), and im wondering if this copper plate has anything to do with it. I havent checked the harness yet but im still curious as to the function of this thin plate.

Re: Purpose of copper plate in MAF ??
Not sure about the size, shape, and location of it but it obviously completes the circuit for a few things. Of course, copper is an excellent conductor and solders great, won't rust or corrode.
I would suggest getting a good soldering gun and carefully Re soldering the connections with rosin core solder. Clean it good if you haven't already withe no residue MAF cleaner. A MAF code probably indicates a MAF problem of some sort! Keith |

Re: Purpose of copper plate in MAF ??
Removed harness and replaced, code is gone and car runs perfectly again..... Still wondering as to the purpose of the copper shield..... it actually looks like it could, if subjected to a shock, short across points on the MAF sensor internal circuit board ... why did they only solder one of the 4 sides to the board??

Re: Purpose of copper plate in MAF ??
Because that is the side that the connections are all on that they needed to solder to a common place!
