That is exactly my point, you cant actually ban someone. I'm not trying to instigate here or be an a-hole, but I just don't agree with threats of bannage from any type of online community. I personally believe that the online world should be a free speech one.

Ownbot is right and you are bluffing. The only truly effective way to ban a specific person is to ban everyone. That is why Rob has been able to come back here so many times.

IP bans can never work because IP addresses do not identify people. They identify one or more computers at a given moment in time.

Sure you could block a whole subnet on your router, but to use Trevor as an example, his ISP uses a /23 subnet (ie. 255.255.254.0). Thats 512 IP addresses. In doing so you would be blocking all other members who use the same ISP as Trevor.

Even if you do that, he could still use a proxy or change his ISP, or use a friends computer with a different ISP. The bottom line is that you cannot keep a technically competent individual out of a publicly accessible site.

Hence my edit. Prior to your post.

this is a "family friendly" site - you cannot argue, and everything is smiles and rainbows.

god forbid a child reads a thread where people criticize each other, because there are a lot of kids reading this forum dedicated to an obscure Subaru car from the 1990's.

Re: Trevor has been given a time out.

It's easy to criticize SVXN for being so family friendly, but every time I piss someone off on another forum or have someone piss me off I remember the ratio of pissers and idiots to mature people over here is very low and often use it as an example of how a forum should be run, minus the ban part, but those are quite rare anyhow.

This is totally out of order Alan. No way is there any truth in this.

It should be quite obvious that the sole reason for that thread is so that Huck can post bigger and bigger pictures of his yellow car.

As mods here we don't actually WANT to ban anyone, temporary or permanent. We believe that everybody should be able to behave in an adult fashion and post within the small handful of rules we have in place.

I'm actually appalled that you believe in the above statement, and I have been totally and absolutely against censorship of media material for adults since I was old enough to understand the concept of censorship.

What you propose with that statement is the verbal equivalent of allowing people to walk down the street and kick or punch anybody they meet that they don't like or don't like the look of. [ This is prohibited by law, most places ]

Allowing people to verbally attack other people and say what they like in a public arena such as a forum is to foster and allow personal attack by insult. This is no different to punching somebody on the street.

On the street is a physical attack. On the forum is an attack by insult. Both are personal attacks. Personal attacks are not allowed here.

When you get in your car and drive down the street you have to obey the rules of the road that were formulated for the safety of road users. This is no different than posting rules on a forum.

Or do you also believe in free driving?

Your freedom of speech is useless here. Considering you are subscribed to this private forum you are bound by the censorship which they have put into place and also bound by the rules that are clearly stated. The "freedom of speech" concept you speak of, if you are trying to relate it to the constitution, has no relevance here.

He is not stopping you from walking into the street and telling people how much you dislike them, but he is telling you that kind of crap is not to be put here unless in a civil fashion.

Freedom is a funny thing. I do like the reference to driving though. It is considered a privilege to be able to drive on public roads. So you must obey the laws put into place to maintain that priviledge. Same with this site. It is a priviledge to be able to post here, you must obey by the rules they have put into effect in order to maintain that same priviledge.

Tom
