4.44 4EAT vs. 3.90 MT Observations

I think I'm one of the only people who's had both the 4.44 auto and 5 speed in the same car.

The 4.44 upgrade is what the svx should have come with originally. It really is peppy and responsive when needed. Fuel efficiency was still there as I averaged 24-28 mpg on the highway.

With the 3.90 5 speed, I am pulling exactly the same RPMs on the highway as the 4.44, so this is something to keep in mind if any of you guys are looking to switch but afraid of the RPMs. It is also much faster and lighter feeling than with the 4.44. The car is a whole different animal, and it feels like it doesn't wallow or lean as much in the turns due to the decreased weight.

There was nothing wrong with my automatic, but I've had the itch for 3 pedals as long as I can remember. I've been asked by a few members as to why I switched, but now I can say what the differences are after having both.

Funny Tim, I noticed a worse handling car going to a 5 speed as though it does weigh less you have a higher center of gravity since you're loosing weight in all the wrong places. Then there is the 1/4-3/8" rise in overall ride height. I'm assuming though that you're comparing a 4.44 auto and the 3.90 5 speed right, not a 4.44 manual which I think is what comes in most Legacy GTs through 04. Wife's GT is humming along at nearly 4 grand at 70mph.

the car does sit higher. I have to adjust the coilovers to lower the front more. But yes I was comparing the 4.44 auto to the manual 3.9.
