Keyless Entry and Security system MAYHEM

I did some research on previous posts and wonder if anyone has had some recent experience with the keyless entry and security system.

My remote transmitter has seen better days, but I was wondering on wheter getting a new one might be a total waste.

When I go through the process of getting the car to go into "learning mode" for the remote, I can never get the security module to acknowledge that it is in learning mode. (the horn and lights don't beep)

I'm afraid that the system in the car may be the culprit.

Is there anyway to trouble shoot the system without having to purcahse a new remote and find out its no good from the car?

I read that if the system isnt used for a while it will no longer run...

Anyway to hard reset the system?
