Outback Stationwagon

I have been looking at a 96 Outback Stationwagon to replace my Toyota Corolla that is about to die. I need somthing that gets ok mileage and I can haul stuff to and from work without trashing my SVXes. Just wondered if anyone can give me some things or trouble areas I should look for. It has 118,000 miles on it and in fairly good shape and everything seems to work. Price is $5950. Any feedback? Thanks in advance.

For $120k I would get a nice 911 Turbo. 444hp and AWD! Talk about a nice grocery getter!!!

Since no one can give you a straight answer , I figure I'll throw my $.02 in.
Mrs.Rotorflyr drives a 97' Outback, rides nice, the brakes are soft though even with new pads, will most likely put on SS lines later this summer. Power is decent for a na 2.5L 4 banger, but could use a little more get up and go. Mileage is similar to the SVX but it's tank is smaller (14gal iirc) so won't go quite as far. Good for hauling stuff, but if your doing a lot of serious hauling, I'd suggest a pu-truck.

Thanks for the reply. Not serious hauling, just stuff I don't want to put in the SVX. I looked on the internet and car places and couldn't even come close to the price I got on this one. I bought it today. Very nice for a very good price. White 1998 with a 5 MT.

i would try asking on the Legacy forum on NASIOC for possible Outback trouble areas .

so you got a '98 instead of the '96! mileage/price/pics?

Outback

Earl,
I too have an Outback. a '96 Auto.
First thing I did was put a tranny cooler on it. At least you wont have to.
From what I understand, early('96 & '97, maybe '98) had some serious piston slap. Beav probably knows years and details.
Also, fairly common for head gasket problems. Easy fix though!
Here in CO a little under powered, but GREAT car overall.
Also, easy for parts!

Thanks for the reply. I find out after I buy it that those are the problems with it, but we shall see. It drives very nicely and has more power with the 5 MT than the auto. I need a few parts to start with, but they shouldn't be a problem. Just need to find a good place for them. I will post a couple of pics today.

Earl is it an h-6 or a 4 banger? From what I know all the 2.5 subies have head gasket issues...fixed with later model years. I dont think you should have any problems with the outback though. Great cars.

The 6 wasn't available in 98. The 2.5's are good, but watch your temp gauge!


Earl, do you have any info on when the headgaskets were done on your Outback? With that kind of mileage if your headgaskets are original you are driving on borrowed time!

BTW I love my Outback. Just took it up to Maine for a weekend. Loaded the kayaks on top (the stock kayak carrier is junk, FYI) and had a blast. Great for hauling stuff!
