MR2 wins first time out.
Technically, this was not my first event in the MR2. I did one autocross last year at the end of the season right after I bought the car. But the tires were shot, the struts were blown and it turned out the engine was not exactly healthy.
Fast forward to now, with Avon Tech-R tires, Konis and the engine rebuilt by yours truly. It's a completely different car. This was a pretty small event in every regard. Normally the course is about 60sec and we have around 70 drivers. Typical times yesterday were around 41-42sec and we only had 32 drivers. The course was so technical that my fastest tiems were run entirely in first gear, banging on the rev limiter for much of the run. I clearly have a lot to learn about driving the car, so I just focused on getting used to a few things. I didn't mess with tire temperatures or strut settings. I set the struts at 50% and just made sure the tires stayed at the pressure I set before the event. The grip this little car has now is astonishing. I won my class and kept improving on my times over a couple fun runs. My fastest official time was 38.6 and I easily ran a 38.2 with a passenger on my last fun run. I won't know for sure until results are posted online, but I think I was 3rd-5th on index. Being the first time out on all that new stuff, I'm pretty happy with that. Picture time!

Nice job! Street Mod is a very "interesting" class. I got to watch SM run before I had to run yesterday and it's a mixed bag of cars. There were at least 2 MR2s that were just flying around the course (had a turbocharged one that gave the crowd something to listen for as its wastegate blew off at various parts of the course - it ran the course about 3 seconds faster than I did).

Nice job. I could never take on a rebuild on my own.
Still seems to be a lot of body roll. Wind up them Konis

Thanks to the rest of you. I can't wait for the next event, which should be a longer, faster course.

I would get lost with so few cones to navigate.

Honestly, Nik, the best advice I can give you is this: walk the course more. If you typically don't have time, then you need to get there a lot earlier. Even on our typical long courses, I walk the thing at least four or five times. Walk it until you can picture the entire thing in your mind. It will be some time before you can imagine how exactly you're going to be driving it, for now just focus on memorizing it. Don't stop walking the course until you can close your eyes and remember every part of it. When you think you have it down, walk it again to make sure. Pay attention to the course. If other people are a distraction and you find yourself joking and talking with them, walk it without them. If you really want to compete, you need to be serious. I know a few people who just can't remember the course, so they draw a map. That's fine, just do whatever you have to do.

Actually last event I ran it, then I walked it. It was an easy course though. I learned my lesson from April's auto-x and my 4 O/Cs that came with it.

The alignment settings seem to be nice so far, though. I had a local shop set the alignment to custom settings for me. I wish I could get more camber out of the front, though. The rear has -2 degrees and the tires wore perfectly back there. The fronts wore mostly on the outside.

That's okay, Andy. I don't exepct everybody to be well-versed on SCCA SOLO2 stock class rules. I'm not allowed to change the springs in my class. I don't really want to take the car out of stock because it's not really competitive in any others. It's barely competitive in ES. Miatas are going to give me a hard time this year and if I come up against a Mk2 MR2 driven by anybody who's at least as good as I am, I'm probably screwed.
A NA Mk2 will probably be my next car - they dominate ES on the national scene.
