Need advice on changing CV boot

Hi,

My dealer told me that my right front drivers side CV boot is worn out and the grease is leaking and quoted me $100 for changing it.

Can you guys tell me where I can find tht one and how hard is it to replace it and do we need any special tools to do this job or its a straight away job?

How quickly should i have to replace it if I am not using the car more often (I hardly use it a couple of days in a week and tht too not more than 10 miles).

I would appreciate if you can give me a rough idea of the location of it and the procedure of performing the job.

Refering to this thread CV Axle / Boot, is my problem same with tht one?

thanks,
-Pavan.

The service manual doesn't say there are any special tools for just the front shaft boot removal, but there is a tool called a band tightening tool for installation. Tool 925090000 or tool 925091000.

Verbatim of what the manual says for removal:

1 Move select lever to neutral
2 Release parking brake lever
3 Lift up Vehicle and remove front wheel
Do not remove axle nut
4 disconnect front exhaust pipe
5 remove stabilizer link
6 disconnect ABS harness clamp from strut
7 disconnect brake hose clamp from strut
8 disconnect lower arm from housing
protect ball joint using cloth to prevent damage
9 remove spring pin which secures transmission spindle to FTJ
10 place alignment marks on shaft and outer race
11 Remove FTJ boot band and boot
12 Remove circlip from FTJ outer race using screwdriver
13 remove FTJ outer race
The grease is a special grease. Do not confuse with other greases.
14 Place alignment marks on free ring and trunnion
15 Remove free ring from trunnion
16 Place alignment marks on trunnion and shaft
17 Remove snap ring and trunnion
Be sure to wrap shaft splines with vinyl tape to prevent boot from scratches
18 Remove FTJ boot
19 Remove BJ boot band

$100 isn't bad for the job including subie parts. I'd take it since axles always seem to be a headache and messy.

True... From the illustrations in the manual, I would have to go with the $100 routine. That sounds like a pretty good deal.

Seems to be a pretty long and cumbersome job, as you guys think the price is reasonable i will go with the dealer.

thanks you guys for ur input.

One thing I might add though is how much is it to replace the whole 1/2 shaft? There are two joints the CV and a DOJ. If one goes the other one typically isn't so far behind. I might aske them to take another look and advise on replacing the whole axle. This actually is a little easier that replacing the boot and joint.

I Also Recommend The Dealer For That Price!!!!! And I Guess They Are Giving You Warranty.... So Don't Bother On Doing It Yourself... Plus The Rebuilt Axels Is About $80.00 Plus The Labor To Install It... Is Not Hard Probably 1/2 Hour With The Right Tools...

ok then, i will ask the dealer to have another look in detail on whole axle and i will let you know wht all he suggests.

Last time I went to the dealer just for an inspection and then only he told me about this. Next time i will ask him to check it in detail.

As you all strongly suggect it as a very cheap deal, i will go with the dealer.

thanks,
-Pavan.

Well Phil When Talking More Than Working That Makes The Time Increase. It Just I Figure Of Speech. Plus You Don't What To Take The Impresive Part Of It, Come On!!!!!!! But Yea, If You Are Just Replacing The Whole Axel As One Pice Is Fast But Replace The Boot That Is More Work, I Hate It, Rather Have The Whole Thing Most Likely With Lifetime Warranty So I Don't Have Rebuild It My Self.....

oops... I didn't word what I said right. What I meant was that you can do in a 1/2 hour what we need 3 hours to do. I thought it went quick, even with us talking as much as we did.
