After reading Beav's post, when, when and when should I change mine? Does it have any warning before it happens? Leaking is better than seizing! Maybe I should put some 'lubricant' for the pump........
Nope, any attempt at lubricating, other than keeping good, clean antifreeze in the system, would not be a good thing. I'd just recommend replacing it at the same time as the t-belt, which in my book of humble opinions, should happen around 90k-100k miles.

Re: Water Pump

HA! I was thinking of starting a water pump poll and then I found this dinosaur poll. I think this is interesting. Vote in this if you didn't do so EIGHT YEARS ago! It looks like only 12% of pumps fail in less than 100K miles. And, of those, one guy lives in a particularly severe environment and who knows if the others had a tendency to either rev up their cars or not replace the coolant regularly.

Re: Water Pump

Just wondering, who selected failed between 65k and 100k just now?

Yes. Did I read your post in the other thread correctly that this car had been sitting for 4+ years? Was the pump dead back then or could it have seized up while sitting? Actually, I would be surprised if a pump that old didn't seize up after sitting for 4 years!

I wouldn't let one of my cars sit for more than a week. I did that ONCE and bees built a nest near the door latch that I discovered when I opened the door!

The car was parked when the pump went.(was originally thought the cam sensor went) Also, them sitting for years has no affect. Trust me, the other one I picked up had been sitting just as long and fired right up when I put in a cam sensor that it needed. Also, I've bought quite a few other SVXes that had sat for anywhere from 2-5 years before my purchase and they fire right up and have no pump or belt issues of any sort.

I'm curious how you know for sure the water pump has never been changed. I only bring this up because unless you have all paperwork for any service, or asked the owners directly or have owned it since new(even this isn't always reliable as many people have no idea what's been replaced on their own cars), there is no way of knowing.

Re: Water Pump

Nate, I bought the car last year from a seller who bought it in 2001 with 60k miles on it from a dealer, and he never replaced the pump, and I would highly doubt a dealer would replace a water pump on a 60k mile car if it wasnt leaking. So IM 99.9% sure its still the original pump.

Re: Water Pump

I didn't replace mine when I did the T-Belt around 120K and it started to leak maybe 5000 miles later, so I got to do the job all over again.

Re: Water Pump

Just crossed the 100K mark, by a couple miles. It's starting to leak. Wondered what would go first. I have had the replacement timing belt for about 4 years now. For the water pump, is Subaru OEM the best route to go?
