Steering Problems

So the problem is not that the car doesn't steer...just that it leaks. I got underneath the car and saw that it is leaking from the rack and on to the exhaust=bad smell+ghetto fabulous smoke fumes from the wheel wells. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it really worth fixing (its a 92)? Anyone advise on what to do or where to get parts? Thanks

Scott

Before you pull the rack I'd check the low pressure return hose - it can get brittle and crack letting the fluid seep out and then down onto the rack - making it look like the rack is leaking. It is a cheap and easy fix.

It might help to clean the engine and then watch for the leak. Good luck.

you might also try a search for the famous "o-ring" fix on the powersteering pump...its a quick fix and only cost a buck or two....which is substantially less then a rack...

If it's leaking onto the exhaust, you do need to get it fixed ASAP. A hot exhaust pipe can and will ignite ATF/PS fluid. Happened to me with another car.

My worries

I replaced the o-rings. It was leaking from them, one was broken and the other was close to breaking. However, the leak still continues. When I turn the wheel all the way to one side it leaks out of the right side boot. Is there an easy way to fix this or do I need a new rack? Maybe theres some magical mystery goo that you poor into the ps pump and it magically fixes all your problems...Its worth asking

How hard is it to change out the rack? I have a chilton guide which tells how to do it, sorta, the instructions are a little vague at points. Is it necessary to remove the left halfshaft to pull it out and how difficult is that? I have all the tools and can do the job, i would just like to know what I'd be getting myself into. Im sure there are some experts out there who can give me a few tips. Thanks

I have not removed a rack, but if you need to take out the halfshaft to do it don't let that be a roadblock to you - they are pretty easy to take out.
