OT Question about Oil Changes on My Audi.

How often should I REALLY be changing the oil?

I commute to the New York City area and back 3-4 times a month for work, which is 800 miles round-trip. As a result, I pack on miles very quickly.

The Audi Dealership (who I have completely service the car) told me that I should have the oil changed when the screen in the car tells me that service is due. I am going on 6500 miles now, and when I go into the service menu, it says that I still have another 3500 miles before I should have it serviced. 10,000 miles seems like a LOT!

FYI, The dealer is using Mobil 1 and the car holds 8 quarts of oil.

So, how often should I actually be getting the oil changed?

Mike

Re: OT Question about Oil Changes on My Audi.

My first oil change on the Z4 is scheduled for 15,000 miles.

The higher end filters and large capacity sumps along with Mobil 1 allow for such a high tolerance so I imagine you should be fine too.

I do change oil each 3500miles.

I agree with Tim. My Crossfire has a large capacity and it calls for M1 also and the service for it is 7k but the book says that the service computer might tell you to go longer on it.

Go to 10k and then do it no matter what the mileage is. IMHO.

Most of the German cars have oil change interval of 10,000 miles or up...

My old boss's 98 M-class also have the oil change interval of 10,000 miles...

Should be fine to listen to Audi....if you worry...can do it one, two thousand miles earlier....

Re: OT Question about Oil Changes on My Audi.

Tim, Danny, Matt, Ken,
while I appriciate your input, Mike asked ME!
Well, Mike, since you asked, oil, (evan Mobile1) is cheap compared to the cost of a replacement engine.
WalMart seems to have the best price on Mobile1 in a five quart tote, and Purolator has some high quality oil filters.
I think that 6000 miles is not too often of an O&F change interval.
On our SEVEN quart systems, Mobile1 comes out clean and slippery after 6000miles so what the heck.

BTW, T,D,M, &K, just kidding!

Re: OT Question about Oil Changes on My Audi.

The way I see it modern engines should outlast the rest of the vehicle. Why bother changing the oil at all. Seriously tough, with 8-10 quarts in there a 10k oil change isn't out of the question, esp with a lot of highway driving. Lots of cold starts and short trips I wouldn't be comfortable with it as you get a lot more deposits and contamination of the oil. I do mine 2x a year regardless of mileage with Mobil 1 as I don't put more than 10k on any car we own in a given year. I simply wait for Pep Boys or Advance to be running a 5 quart and Mobil 1 filter special then buy 2 for each car (although it seems Mobil 1 doesn't make a filter for the XJR so I have 5 or so spare X type filters in the basement).

Biggest problem with extended oil changes is for the average person going 6 months or 10k without checking your oil is kind of scary.
