Brake Job

Today, I finally had a break from the rain (it has been pouring for a week straight and I have no shelter to work in), so I got onto the brakes.

First was the transmission brake band adjustment for the 5th time. But, this time I did it to factory specs by tightening the adjuster all the way down, marking the bolt and then turning it out exactly 3 turns.

I drained 700ml of transmission fluid and 500ml of engine oil and added Lucas transmission stop slip and Lucas oil stabilizer.

I then put on a complete set of 4 new rotors and 4 new sets of brake pads.

I was working on the last brake as dark fell and completed it just as the rain returned.

I am tired and will sleep well tonight, but with a good feeling of accomplishment.

Jazzmine's messy engine

Now you know my mug

Bet they won't look like that for too long

Re: Brake Job

Is that John Hoffman's old pearlie?

Edit: Yes it is. This is what the engine is supposed to look like in the "Pristine Pearlie." Get to work!

What he said.

Remember there are pristine detailing coveralls and maintenance/ brake job coveralls for dirty work only. They are not interchangable!

Surgical scrubs are also acceptable.

John’s “Pristine Pearlie” is now my “Jazzsmine”
Pearlie was sold at 172,310miles
Now Jazzmine has 224,400miles

Get to work indeed!
But, function before fashion.
There is not much use in detailing an engine that is leaking out every seal (exaggeration).

Also, the front plastic pan from under the car is missing, so all the road dirt accumulates too. Maybe someone has one for me? I will need to get one before the winter and road salt comes,( though the layer of oil over everything is a good rust inhibitor. )

Re: Brake Job

Very nice car you have there dood!

It was this car when John had it got me started lusting after Pearlies, and 5 or 6 SVXes later I still don't have one.

But I have patience, my car will come.

Take good care of it, but above all, enjoy it.

Joe

Re: Bike Job

Oh, and I missed welcoming you in your other thread, so you are very welcome aboard Tim.

I'm a biker too, there are a few of us about. Check my Blackbird in my signature.

My friend Mike and I on tour this summer met a couple on a brand new pearlescent green ZZR1400. Really a superb machine, I thought it was magic. We are both Honda guys, Mike has a VFR. Did your wife not get on with the VFR800? They are a very smooth sort of machine.

Thanks for the welcome Joe.

Your Blackbird is a beauty! I was considering one when I sold my ZX11 (at over 100,000kms on the clock). Such a well balanced machine, smooth as silk and refined as only Honda does.

The mean green ZZR1400 is indeed a superb machine. Not as nice in the fit in finish as your Honda, and the styling takes a little to warm up to, but the engine, OHHHH THE ENGINE, it is indescribable. At 120Kmph you cannot even feel it, it is so smooth, it is like hovering, low level flight and then you put those 200 horses to the pavement and rocket into the stratosphere with brutal acceleration! Thank goodness it comes with brakes to match. This bike would have done-me-in in my younger days, but now I have hundreds of thousands of riding experience, 17 years under my belt and have enough maturity to handle her. My first bike when I was 15 years old was a Honda NSR400 (you are a Honda guy, so I thought you may get a kik out of that), I wish I still had that NSR, so rare, and she was in pristine condition.

The VFR was just too big and heavy for my wife to get comfortable with and to be honest I did not like the bike either. The fit and finish was beautiful, the chassis was a dream but I did not like the engine at all, the V-Tech system and all, the power delivery just felt wrong. Now my wife has a Honda Hawk NT650 and absolutely loves it and so do I. It is a perfect balance and the exhaust note makes those Ducati riders envious.

Cheers,
Tim

Re: Brake Job

Thanks Tim

I'm very fond of the 'Bird, it does so many things so well, and the handling is stable. It would not be quite as fast as your Kwakser, but it's still stupidly quick. I'm often at 120 by the time I've revved up through the box, and I'm not talking Kms.

NSR 400! You are going back to the smoky days here man. Yeah, lovely bike, great design.

I think the VFR is beautifully finished, and in fact I traded up from a VFR to the Blackbird. Geometry wise and ergonomics wise the BB is a slightly bigger VFR with a lot more power. However I've heard so many complaints about the VTec engine I've no doubt you are correct.

My mate Joe used have an NTV650 before he went totally Beemers, and it was an absolute doddle to ride, plus comfortable and competent. I wish your Missus luck and safety with it.

I actually like the styling of the ZZR very much, but when I change my bike again I'm thinking of a Triumph Tiger 1050. Slower than the BB I know, but I'm going for comfort over WTF!!! this time.

Joe
