Re: power steering hose pressure leak

The flexible hose is available every where. Check the pressure & temperature numbers for the line you want to replace.

Re: power steering hose pressure leak

That's good to know. I have the same problem, only it's leaking from the opposite end, right where it hose connects to metal adapter.

maybe you need to torque it a little more ? , i would give it a try , for my problem its different ,the hose dryed then cracked right in the middle, when i give hard time with steering it pisses everywhere until it flow on the exhaust and makes smoke ......smells too

Re: power steering hose pressure leak

I've just had the pressure hose, pump and rack replaced on my steering. I'm a mechanical newbie so someone else will need to confirm, but I picked up on this -

Is it the rubber 'sleeve' over the metal pressure hose itself that you mean, Francis? If so, as I understand it, the rubber hose is basically for protection only (from heat/friction) - it doesn't carry the fluid, the metal pressure hose does, so it couldn't be the source of your leak, just where you're seeing it come from if the rubber hose is also worn.

When I asked about my problems here I was told it would be one of two things:
1. Hose clamps were worn or not tight enough
2. Metal pressure hose would be worn/have a hole.

No, but...

There's a hydraulic hose company called Pirtek (worldwide) - they fitted the original clamps from mine to a new length of hose. Similar places were under 'Hoses - fittings' in the phone directory. Was about half the price of a new one & both places where I live have a mobile service.

Or, if you take the hose to an autoparts store, they can identify it and sell you the type you need.

http://www.pirtek.com/

Tania.
hoping I haven't just made an idiot of myself

If you have to ask if it's replaceable, you're not equipped with the tools and suplies to do it.

Fiind a hydraulic hose repair shop. Some non-chain auto parts stores do it, or find a place that works on heavy equipment (back hoe's, loaders) and they'll be able to reuse your ends. It should cost ~$30. Much better than the $80-100 to get a new one from Subaru.

Re: power steering hose pressure leak

that hose is in rubber. i dont think that this is rubbercovered. it is so easy to bend it any ways . and the reason why it is leaking is because it dryed and it made a crack on the rubber. im 99.99999% sure its not metal under it
i maybe solved the problem i have my other svx standing in my driveway waiting to be taken apart "spare pieces ", so before working on my nice svx i decided to practice my mech skills on the junk one and removed the hose and analysed how it is made, maybe i'll just use it instead of buying a new one

i'll try to post picture soon

Re: power steering hose pressure leak

Yeah, that's the high pressure hose. Find a local shop to rebuild it.

Reading back over my earlier post, I may not have been clear.

I meant rebuilding the hose itself, not replacing a used/new/rebuilt hose on the car. To take the old hose off and put another on, is a fairly straightforward job, although the bottom connection can be a little tough to get to.

Re: power steering hose pressure leak

Those hoses are a pain in the ass. You have to cut the original metal piece off, affix two new metal ends with a new piece of hose in the middle (requires crimper) and then figure out how to safely attach it to the exposed metal ends. ORRRRR you could buy an entirely new piece and unscrew each end of the hose. I just caught that in the pictures. My old Audi didn't have that handy feature.

In short, shop work.

Average PSI for Power Steering systems range from 1000-2500.

*grin* thought that seemed a little harsh, Hocrest.

Francis it was hocrest that told me about the rebuild thing... hmm, and most of the rest, too...

I now have a happy little steering system.
ok, so it took a reconditioned rack and pump too, but hey...

Re: power steering hose pressure leak

well i did not have a lot of problem removing the hose from my old\new svx....installing it was another part , to make my job easier i jacked the car ,removed passenger wheel, removed small plastic cover and i had a good view of the bottom connection , i was much easy, safer and quicker than being under the car . so finally , ITS REPAIRED !! . but it is still leaking from the pump, seems coming from the pipe o-ring i guess it won't be soo hard with the how-to document...anyway thanks for your help and advices

p.s. ....its 14 mm and not 9\16 got damn i almost ****'d up the nut trying to unscrew it
