How Can I Be Sure.....

That the vehicle I'm going to look at waaaaay out of state is, in fact, registered and titled to the guy I'm dealing with? He isn't very computer savvy and has no fax. Something doesn't smell right.......but it is a nice ride!

how can you be sure of what?? Go look at the car and find out if it is too good to be true. I am sure there is a checklist of things to look at on here somewhere

How can I be sure that the guy I am dealing with is the registered/titled owner. Carfax doesn't have the info, is there a search somewhere that does?

it will say it on the title. If he is not the owner, tell him to screw off and report him to the police

My point is that he says "I can't find the title, but I could order one" he SAYS the title is clear.

Before I drive 400 miles each way with my BS detector going off full blast, I'd like to know if there is a way to look up the title online and make sure that he is the owner free and clear.

that I am not sure of...sorry for the confusion I guess I misunderstood your question. If he can produce a title that means he just lost the old one. A dupe title is no big deal as long as it is legit. Get the VIN and carfax it, if it was stolen I am sure it will pop up

I had a problem with an out of state title not being completed correctly. Be sure the title is filled out properly and you get a bill of sale. The BMV in Ohio gave me a hard time because other people didn't fill my title out properly.
Just be cautious and make sure you leave with some type of completed paperwork before you travel back 400 miles.

Good luck

I bought a vehicle out of state where the owner couldn't find the title. He kept his story straight. Everything he said was very consistent, and despite the fact that the deal seemed too good to be true, it was true. If he had sounded suspicious, I wouldn't have made the 1200 mile trip. Over the internet he sounded like an idiot, but over the phone it was pretty clear that he was legitimate, or an amazingly good scammer. He and I drove to the licensing office and the bank together just so we both felt secure in our dealings.
