Hey finally someone else from Rochester! I just got back from Van Bortel...where did you go? They wanted $490 to do the front axle.
A shop around the corner from my house will do it for $170. What's that tell you? Call around...seems Subaru thinks SVX owners are filthy rich, that
or they're still trying to recoup their losses from those people that did buy an SVX!
Where do you live?

I would strongly recommend getting a second opinion. You could replace the items with parts from a parts car for much less than that.

A dealership service writer once told me I needed a new exhaust system -- engine "Y" pipe to bumper -- for my '86 Suby wagon. Something in the neighborhood of $1200, as I recall. Instead, I got a local muffler shop owner to do a bit of welding, for under fifty bucks.

Anytime a dealership tells you you need a whole new anything, keep going. I second Earthworm's motion that you get another opinion.

Howdy neighbor! My wife teaches in Spencerport. The place doing my axle
is called PRR Automotive, here in Hilton, on Manitou Rd. I don't know much about them yet. A reputable shop for Sports car owners in the area is Eksten Autoworks, in Greece, on Bennington Drive. Get out the phone book, and start calling around. You didn't say where you brought your car for a diagnosis; Van Bortel is usually trustworthy, just expensive. It's a cruise I know, but usually worth it. As was already mentioned, you may want to try someone with a parts car...maybe Ebay? Good luck, and keep us posted.
This site in invaluable!

I can send you a stock rear end for the cost of shipping.
The LSD internals do not wear out.
Axles are about $100.00 each.
Find a shop that you can trust and save a bundle.

That's great! They are very dependable. They build and maintain a lot
of nice race cars, mostly BMW's. Tons of experience, (check out some of the pictures on the walls) and nice guys too. Tell 'em I sent ya!
BTW, the place around the corner from me seems pretty similar. (PRR)
Good luck, and let us know how you make out!

The place is a little hard to find. There are a couple auto shops back in there, behind Romigs Tavern, Ekstens is closest to the tracks. Turn off of Dewey, and go about 100 yds. and turn right. Then go to the back.
Look for expensive sports cars......

It's not that we weren't all thinking it.

Did you hear the one about the proctologist who went to the convention to look up a few old friends?

He said he was "this close" to being a gynecologist.
