Hissing...

So I'm under my hood doing my daily poking around and I notice a hissing sound coming from somewhere in the area behind the steering pump. As the car warmed up the sound died a bit. Is it possible the intake is loose? I don't think its the pump because I haven't had any problems so far with the steering (knock on wood) Any thoughts? Thanks.

I has a noise come when i started the car but it was more of a loud humming noise or something. It also stopped once the car warmed up. Adding Power Steering fluid did the trick.

I doubt...

It's the fluid as I has been staying level...This is definately an air sucking noise of some type. However, I will never admit my SVX sucks...

???

Mike, how's your power steering working? The o-ring in between the reservoir and the pump has a tendency to get crushed and start sucking air in, bogging down the pump. Eventually the pump starts slipping against the belt, making the belt squeal like it's loose.

The o-ring is very simple and cheap ($2?) to replace, so I think I'd start with that.

Yeah i have experienced this air sucking noise too. I hear it from the inside...not too loud but i can hear it...doesnt happen alot only sometimes. And it also goes away when the car warms up.....only lasts for a few seconds. I should open the hood when it happens to see where its coming from.

Loose Manifold?

The inlet manifold is known to loosen and suck air. It is one piece, spanning a crankcase and two heads, with gaskets in between. So it needs to be checked once a year.
