My Subaru Dealer Screwed Up!!

So I take the SVX to the dealer (John Elway Subaru South) yesterday afternoon to get an oil change which took about 40 minutes. After getting home the service department calls me and informs me the they put the WRONG OIL FILTER ON??? ARG!!! They told me that the filter that they put on will work but is the wrong type!! What the hell is wrong with people? How can you be as stupid??????

You can't even trust your local Suby dealer to do things right these days!! I knew I should have changed it myself!

What other screw-ups has everyone had with their local Suby shops??

Well when I first got my SVX I would take it to the dealer for repairs, nothing bad like putting wrong parts in and what not, but whenever I got it back either something didn't work, like the lights, or little plastic covers would be strewn around my car like the fuse box cover and the little seatbelt things. HIGHLY annoying.

Your subaru dealer screwed up? That reminds me of yesterdays front page article, "RAIN", yeah, I know, I was wet!!! I called 8 days after I ordered some parts from local subie and they informed me that it wasn't their fault that they hadn't ordered them yet! I hear in some locations the NRA has declared the dealers "safe practice zones", but only if you place all the targets on managment

Well I don't know sounds lke you got a good dealer to me. They had the moxie to give you a call and tell you they had made a mistake.Sounds like they take some pride in their work and care about their customers.

I would agree. At least they called you about it. Did you ask if they would put the right one on for you. It seems that they should do that free of charge. I know it takes some more of your time, but at least you will feel better that the right filter is on it.

Gary Lang Subaru decided that even if i told them to replace the EGR solenoid valve, i REALLY meant the EGR valve. so they decided to replace that, and then not refund me for doing the wrong thing... so i ended up replacing the entire EGR system, when i believe it was about 20$ worth of cracked rubber hoses that was the actual problem...

There are two oil filters that look physically identical. The '15208AA060' and the 'SOA5165109.' the 15208AA060 has 141 square inches of filtration surface. The SOA5165109 has 201 square inches of filtration surface. The 15208AA060 is designed for use with the H-4 engines, where the SOA5165109 is designed for use with the H-6 engines. Using a 15208AA060 on a SVX is not going to cause long term damage, the oil could just get more dirty more quickly. Every now and then when we would run out of the h-6 filters at the dealer where I worked, we would sub in the H-4 filter. It wouldnt have caused you any harm, and the H-4 filter is still better than a store-bought filter as the Subaru filters have a special check-valve that opens at 23psi.

I would also like to point out that my Dealership, Kerven Subaru, is top-notch, and the only people I will trust with my cars.

I must voice my opinion... of course I'm on the [{WESTERN SLOPE}].... and maybe it doesn't apply...
But I'm not going to take my car back to the dealer..... I gave them a chance... they f**ked it. I'm done with them.

I can beat you all!

I just read this thread tonight digging though some old ones I may have missed. I usually wouldn't post but I can't beleive the dealer here!

Lets start with the five transmissions that the car has had in two years, with still problems they finally decided was due to the motor mounts! They said that only after I asked if that could be the problem because it sounded like something that was loose when in reverse the gas was hit hard backing up a steep hill. They told me for sure that was that was the problem. After some thought I decided that was their fault, you know after installing four trannys in a few months and removing the original, I figured they didn't use the service mount for the engine. that was not the only problem. The security system quit while they had it. I figure if I break their car while I have it they want me to fix it, so the same goes for them. I talked to the owner and he got very upset about me accusing them of breaking things...Mean while I lived a year without air conditioning because while the car was there I received it back w/o AC. anyway I could go on and on... the owner got mad because I made accusations to him and he told me never to come back!

Jeez, he did me a favor...after bringing the car to a trusted mechanic I know he looked over the car top to bottom for me and is now fixing it, he found they charged me for a timming belt and a crank shaft seal that they never replaced, the took the freon out of the air and told me it needed an evaporator. (fixed for free, just added freon.) there was no problem with the motor mounts, they just decided to take two bolts out of the back of the mounts I guess for the sesation so I would return to repay them for some of the warranty work. Fixed for free! They also told me I needed new power steering bushings, really they had taken a bolt out of some control arm attached to the steering(fixed for free), and last the tranny problem they could not figure out and kept replacing was the duty solenoid D. Now replaced and running much better.
I am scared to know how much more damage they might have caused and chrged me a fortune to fix. All total including re-repairs I am going to be spending a grand or two but imagine had I gone back there...new ac evap, new motor mounts new busings for ps (and a rack too by the time they were done with me, but I knew I already needed that but they didn't even tell me about it..) I could go on and on all night but this is the abbreived version...NEVER BRING AN SVX TO KELLY SUBARU!

There is also a new filter for the WRX and STi that is even smaller than the SOA5165109. I can't remember the part # of that one, but either way they will all work.

Mike is right. Your dealer probably just ran out of the 6 cylinder filter. The 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder oil filters can be mixed and matched. The only difference is the amount of filter inside. In a pinch, either will work fine. In fact, I run the 6 cylinder filter on my 2.5L Outback.

p.s. The new filter is 15208aa080, and it is very small!
