Should I buy an SVX....??
Hey, I am 16 and I am thinkin about buying myself a new car, I have a 1992 Honda accord that I am going to sell, And I have been thinking about this SVX I saw for just over $9,000 Canadian.
I have heard many good things about the car, and lots of bad things too. I heard that there are tons of tranny problems, and brake problems... I just want to know whether it is worth the money, and if I will need to put tons of money into the car? -Hash_man |

If you get a good one, it might be trouble free, but if you get a bad one, it will be a nightmare. This car can not be abused, so if you want to go around corners on two wheels, race every car at every light, this probably is not the car for you. It has lots of power, and is fun to drive, but you can get into trouble with it too. You need to think about what you want to do with the car, and then have the car checked out by someone who knows the SVX. This may save you some headaches. Good luck, and welcome to this forum. You can learn a lot by reading the posts and doing a seach on subjects that you are interested in.

16 and buying a car.
Wow, when I was 16, I could never afford a car like the SVX. This thing may eat you out of house and home. Even the little things add up.
*goes into the way back machine....* OK, You want something different, cool, that chicks will dig. It should be fast, or at least SOUND/LOOK fast! *laughs* In all those respects, the SVX is perfect for you. But, then comes the price of keeping it running. Example: I have to replace 1 225/50ZR16 tire... 131 bucks. On my VW bug, $100 got you all four tires. Tranny repair/replace? You could buy an entire Honda, and a pretty nice one at that. Wheel bearings every 30,000 miles maybe? cha-ching. Shoot my toyota truck has the original bearings all around @ 213,000 miles. The SVX runs on hi-test fuel and isn't a milage machine. Fuel costs are pretty high these days. You won't win many street races in your SVX. Every high-school-hot-rod camero is gonna dust you. (unless there is a corner involved.) In conclusion....maybe you are loaded and can afford to keep these things running. If not, consider some other cars. Oh yeah, and the back seat is WAY TOO SMALL for a highschool kid with a car! *laughs* |

I'll just say this: When males are 16, they tend to do not so smart things with cars. Considering the SVX is within your price range, yes, you should think about getting one, because they're awesome cars.
However, if you drive like a normal 16 yr old, you're going to get screwed my friend... if you race people a lot, try to fly around corner, or do anything else like that the car is going to turn around and bite your ass with HUUUGGEEE repair bills. May I make a suggestion? Look into 2nd gen RX7s. Good on gas, huge performance potential, the aftermarket is there, and they're not too expensive. - Rob |

Hell yes!
But make sure the timing is right. The more cars you own before buying an SVX, the more you will appreciate it.

I got my SVX for my first car at 17...chicks definatly dig it. , If i were you I'd ask around the Canadian members and check if they would be willing to check out the car you're interested in. But again...chicks dig it! You're wallet may not though, dont fall in love with the first one you see, or atleast try not to, check the papers and view all your options before making a final decision.

Give your head a shake, man! First, call about insurance and even if you don't have collision its expensive... Your car will always need some work: they are very complex cars and you don't have the first clue yet! Having a beautiful car that you never drive because either its broke or you are is a no go!!!! 100% THE CHICKS WILL THINK YOU ARE A JERK!!!! What could be a better motive???? Unless your dad is willing to roll out big bucks on an ongoing basis you will do nothing but regret the purchase. the advice so far is pretty good. you will find the car to be great, but it is not inexpensive to maintain. my only comment about the advice so far concerns the rx7. if you think a trannie is expensive try a new or rebuilt motor (2K at least PLUS labor) if the seals go on the rotary, which can happen over 100,000 miles.

Ya really. Who the hell suggests an RX7 as a cheaper alternative. It should say don't sell your Accord, the damn thing will run forever. If you want to impress the chicks just get some flashy wheels and a big wing. Ya know what they say about a guy with a big wing right.

I sold a my nice 86 Accord in very good shape to get my SVX. To this day, I regret the purchase. I can tell you from experience that Hondas drive nice, run forever, and take endless amounts abuse with little maintenance. Not that my SVX is high maintenance (Yet) but even little things such as brake jobs are expensive, unless you do it yourself.
This has been said before but I'll say it again; if your parents will pay for the car to be fixed when need be, fine. But the last thing you want is to go off to college in two years time and be stuck with paying for the damn thing.

The SVX, to me, is a luxury sports car, with a rather firm ride, and smooth power(thanks to the trany) its a good car to own, as long as you maintain it. there are only 3 main faults: Trany's over heating, brake rotors warping, and rear bearings wearing out prematurely. The rest of the car is above average, lots of plastic, solid galvanized metal, comfortable seats, fully optioned out interior, and one very exceptional look.
All the advice you have seen in this thread is great, and listen to it, but when it comes time to make a decision on the right car for yourself. Chose a car that a certified Mechanic has looked at and can tell you he/she would buy him/herself. The fact that your asking people on this forum is probably the best thing you could have done. FYI. just 5 months ago I was here doing the exact same thing.

Yo I am from Canada too...from T.O..
Lemme say this, rite now a full tank of gas costs me $51 cdn. Yea maintenance is expensive and all but is definitely worth it when u drive it. In time, I am goin to convert it to 6 speed and as long as ur maintain it, it will last forever... Like any car, the svx does have it's fair shar of probz but all can be fixed but u may need to put a lil $ to fix them permanently....U can change the stock rotors to the cross drilled ones of the "big" ones from brembo, u can convert it to 5/6 speed....U don't have to do all this in the beginning, over time would be better but once these are both done...Even hondas have that distributor problem, that happens very randomly, I had a 95 civic 2 months ago and I took it about 80 kms away from home. I tried to start it but it didn't, the distributor was dead and that cost me $500, later that month, i crashed it..black ice but with the money that the insurance gave me i bought the svx and i can say the svx is $10 more than the honda..I am paying $185 cdn for it monthly. The fact that this car is AWD, lowers the insurance alot. |
