Re: Consumer reports says...

Uh, umm, I'm not the fact police, but, why is #3 and #8 the same?

I'd like to know which one is best for bang buck, and the difference between #3 and #8 might change my buying patterns.

I guess my brother was right though, Zymol is good.

Re: Consumer reports says...

the list is a good reference! but are #3 and # 8 the same price/same brand? my choice is ranked #7 - not bad. i didn't go for the cheapest one and the most expensive one! i went for something i think that's good and value for my money! i'm still a student and need to spend money more wisely. if or when i get my new paint job, that'll be a different story! i'll go for the best i can afford. but, if i wax my car so often like 1-2 times a month, do you think is that a matter of different kinds of wax?

Nu finish and Armor All polishes actually damage paint. They contain Silicone, and thats very bad.... another typical consumer reports deal.... I think they are more advertisements than actual information.

Wait -- isn't consumer reports a "non advertising" rag? Plus, after using Nu Finish on my last three cars, I never experienced any "damage" to the paint . . . well, that is until I totaled the Spitfire. Other than that, I had nothing but good experiences.

I'd be interested to know what their criteria was: i.e. ease of use, durability, reflectivity, etc. Maybe you could encapsulate their testing procedure for us?

Clean'in...and shin'in

<Time to celebrate with some cheap pink wine.>

AGAIN???
-------------------------
Unfortunately, my favorites are not listed in the poll...

I wash my car with a 50/50 solution of Ajax Household cleaner with ammonia and Simple Green....works great on the bugs.

My wax of choice is Pledge....and I tidy her up every weekend with some Endust.

The paintchips are masked by a fresh application of chewing gum brushed with printers ink; on a black car, it creates the impression of black holes floating against the inky blackness of space.

PS...Don't feel bad Kev, I thought the thread was about Polish food when I first glanced at it! And for the record...I use Meg-"wires" Gold Class stuff on top....black Turtle Wax on the chips and bottom. Like it really matters with MY MISERABLE PAINT JOB!

I actually schedule my car cleanings/waxings. I inform the wife that I will not be available on the day of the XX for any social activities.

Nu finish and Armor all wax both contain silicone, which is bad for paint, and over time weakens the paint. It also makes it very difficult to repaint the cars, or repair paint if they are wrecked. I spent too long working in a paint shop doing prep work for painters, listneing to them complain about the waxes that people were using to ever use that crud on my vehicles.

Yikes. I stand corrected. Never mind.

Thumbs down No Silicone

Zombie is 100% correct. Stay away from using anything that contains silicone,it is a bodymans worst nightmare.I use only Maguires products on my cars. They are what they call paintable,
no silicones. Very good products, all of them.

# 3 and # 8

The difference between 3 and 8 is #3 was the liquid, and # 8 was the paste...I think. I will go back to CR and see what else I can dig up.

About the wax testing at CR

This is right from the web site...

The tests behind the RatingsThe overall score is based primarily on gloss and durability, as well as cleaning, resistance to scratching or hazing, and ease of use. For most tests, we used metal panels with a finish similar to that on car panels. We applied a quarter-teaspoon of polish and used an equal number of buffing strokes with each sample. To assess gloss, three engineers visually compared two products at a time. For our durability tests, more than 1,500 measurements tracked how water beaded as the wax wore away. We used a syringe to deposit two consistently sized drops of distilled water in the same two places on each test panel. An optical comparator enlarged each drop and allowed us to gauge the contact angle from the side of the drop to the panel's surface. We weathered the waxed panels outdoors, retesting periodically. The contact angle decreased from 90 degrees or more to 60 degrees or less as the wax wore away. Our cleaning and scratching/hazing tests were much like those for gloss, with side-by-side comparisons of test panels. For the ease-of-use tests, we used cars volunteered by staffers. Price is the estimated average for the size tested, based on a national survey.

Go to NSXSC.com. It's an Acura NSX club site. They do a pretty good real world test with Zaino, Zymol, Macguires & some others.
It's Zaino by a hair over the cheapest Zymol.
Ron.
