I'm with the Alt folks, it can be charging fine and be the alternator (actually charging too much which will cost you a heck of a lot in the long run). Find a local starter/alt and go there not to a mechanic. Have them check it out. If a mechanic wanted to be an electrician he/she would've gone to electrical school not mechanics! The two are very different fields. A rebuilt one should be between $100-150 from a local shop with quality (i.e. not Indian copper wiring and aluminum connectors) parts.
Oh and you should not be driving the car at all until you have it checked, that is unless you want to risk frying your harness computers and relays along with your battery! |

No decision to me, a local shop will rebuild it right which is important on that cold rainy night miles from home out of cell range. When mine went and stopped charging I got all of 7 miles before loosing everything.
I've yet to see an SVX reman for less than the price of a local shop doing it. Quote:

They slapped in a new alternator for 290. 160 or so for parts the rest was labor and tax.

It is all good the car has a new Alternator and is runnning like a champ. Just did a drive up to Yosemite and it was great how much fun it is on a tight-cornered mountain road =).
