keyless entry, alarm install?

Ok I am having a small problem with my driver's side door lock. It was pushed inside the door. (pin or collar must have broke). I am planning to take the skin off tomorrow and check it out but it got me thinking. All the constant wear on the locks everytime I use the car is probably not a good thing, so I am considering getting a keyless system installed along with an alarm system. total cost is between 300 and 400 Cdn depending on what unit I would get. I think this would help to reduce the wear and tear on the locks and give me a alarm system on the car to boot. My car currently has neither.
Your opinions please...

While we're here, if anyone has installed one, where did you put it? There's not a heck of a lot of legitimate item-mounting room under the dash.

I don't think saving wear on the door lock is much of a consideration in whether or not to buy an aftermarket remote/alarm setup. In most cases the key will probably wear out before the lock.

Do you know what's wrong with your stock remote and alarm?

Yeah, he lives in the wrong country... Canadian models didn't get the alarm system, but they did get heated seats.

Subbie, when you unlock the drivers side, does the passenger side unlock also?

Talk to SVXdc, he's been planning on putting together an aftermarket alarm install kit that will use the stock wiring harness. But... I guess maybe the Canadian models don't have the wiring either???

As far as placement of the system? there is some room under the dash, but you'll need to be creative.

Gah! The last time I saw you getting "creative" with a dashboard involved a sawzall!

I've done some digging around under there... Looks like I'm going inverted again. If I come up with something good, I'll post it up.

hahhaah... yeah, but that was for a very special installation

I seem to remember a baffle in the removable ecsaine, knee pad piece. Maybe that can be trimmed to allow more room.

Yes when I unlock the drivers side the passenger side unlocks as well. A very nice feature I may add. And yes I do have the heated seats. Don't know if this baby is goign to see another winter though so I don't know how much they will be used. But come to think of it, I did use them a few times on cool nights this summer already.

So are you guys suggesting that even trying to fit in an aftermarket alarm system might be tricky given the limited amount of room under the dash???

Others have done it and have had it done.

If I was taking it to a shop, though, I'd ask to see some of their work where space is at a minimum. I've seen some real bad "professional" installs

I'm not saying it's impossible to mount anything under the dash... I'm only wondering if anyone found a good spot!

Just curious, would under the front seat be a bad place for an alarm controller? I mean, unless the seat heaters would melt it I can't see why you'd need to cut into any part of the dash.

Fixed my disappearing lock problem only took a few minutes. Good as new... still considering the remote entry though so it doesn't happen again.

So it's perfectly clear... the sawzall was being used to make room for the roll cage in the racer.

HEHE
I kinda sorta figured it was something like that.
There was mention of cutting the knee bolster under the dash though. I can't see doing that as there are myriad other places an alarm controller could be installed. Just as long as it's out of sight from outside.
