Rear wheel bearing or rear diff???

Ok,picked up this car a month ago, 92 LS-L with a 4.44 auto with 88k on the body and 6k on the rebuilt motor, not sure about the tranny . It's been great so far other than the fact that it likes fuel... A LOT of fuel in the city . Anyways a couple of weeks ago I noticed a slight roar coming from the rear, so I said no prob since it sounded like the roar on my Impreza when it's bearings were going out around the same mileage. The sound gets louder as I go faster and is less when I turn one way vs.the other, but a couple of days ago I noticed a couple of drops on garage floor where the rear end of the car would sit.

So I took a peek underneath tonight and noticed the rear diff looks a little wet and the left side of the diff shaft has a lot of gunk on around it. So could it be 1) rear wheel bearing, 2) something in the rear diff due to possibly low fluid and bad seal or 3) both? Not to familiar with what a diff sounds like if it's going bad, I'm gonna try to see if I can drain and service the rear end to be safe or take to some one to service it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Edit: the sound is coming more from the left wheel than the center of the car,but it sounds like both sometimes.

Not a good sign for the rear diff...

Meh, my diff's been covered in goop since I bought the car with no problems. Keeps it from rusting. My vote is wheel bearing.

Re: Rear wheel bearing or rear diff???

I agree my diff was pretty wet and gunked up, I had it looked at and was told it was fairly normal and not to worry about it. I think it is much more likely a wheel bearing.

Re: Rear wheel bearing or rear diff???

Yeah, that's what I'm leaning toward. It just caught me off guard since I'm the original owner of my RS with 109K on the clock and the rear diff looks nowhere near as dirty as the one on the SVX. But still, better to ask an opinion on this forum and be safe than to ruin something on the car that I'm not familiar with yet. Thanks for the replies.

Wise move and always check out the simple and inexpensive items first before listening to people that tell you that you need a major repair. You will know the voice of reason when you hear it and the others are usually impaired by senility or are just misery seeking company.

WOW! We were all wondering where you were hiding... Haven't gotten any of your "words of wisdom" in several days.

I certainly agree! Checking the simple things like the radiator cap, the windshield wipers, the interior lights, making sure the sun roof works... gee, there are thousands of "simple things" to check first!!!

From the composition of those "world altering remarks", the only conclusion we can all draw is that you, as well as president obumer, also have one of those "teleprompters.

If you ever get the idea you are "out of your league" accept it... You are right.

That said, Welcome back!!

Re: Rear wheel bearing or rear diff???

Jack the rear tires off the ground safely and try spinning them. Bearings are, by far, more likely to fail than the rear diff.

I also find the SVX amplifies the noise and the bearings aren't actually as bad as they sound.

The one exception for me was a front bearing on my project car where the wheel wouldn't spin smoothly.

Pretty much... I have lived my life treating everyone nicer than they treat me, with the exception of a couple of zeros that just can't zip it. The maniac is one of those two. My responses is simply to "it's" uncontrolled, uncalled for, crap that is injected from the dumbest "thing" that has ever posted on this form..

Thanks for asking... If the "powers that be" will simply wake up and put a stop to those childish attacks on me, there will never be another thing said from my input concerning "it". I am as tired of the "it" as anyone is, maybe more so.

If you actually have an intelligent bit of advise, maybe it would be best to give it to the "maniac" that continually starts this mess... That could possibly give you at a least a small bit of creditability...

Hate to inject facts in an attempt to stop the insanity but this thread was from, what, a couple of weeks ago?

Post #13 seems like unnecessary baiting, harassment and instigation...but maybe it is me.

Re: Rear wheel bearing or rear diff???

Maybe both of you need to quit this personal crap. You're both grown-ass men, and you would not be behaving like this in person, so you shouldn't be doing it on the internet.
