Lighthouse anyone?

Not SVX related but.....

The Wind Point Lighthouse is having one of its two open house tours for 2001 on July 1st. The lighthouse is the tallest on Lake Michigan and was built in 1888 (I think). To anyone interested, or going to be in the Racine, Wisconsin area on that date, the tour includes a climb to the top of the tower for a view of Racine (Chicago on a clear day and Milwaukee on a, somewhat, clear day). The open house is a fund raiser to help preserve the landmark (I don't know why we bought the darn thing) and adult admission is $10 and children under 12 are $5. Tours start at 11:00 AM. Reservations are required and need to be placed by the 22nd of June (sorry for the short notice but I haven't been keeping up on Village goings on lately (isn't the Village Idiot the happiest guy in town?)).

If anyone out there is interested in attending drop me an email and I'll get all the information necessary for you to get signed up. I'll try to have more advance notice for the fall tour.

It is a pretty cool thing and the attached hall is available for rent for special occasions (SVX meet?).

Now, unfortunately, I need to get back to work.

Open (light)house

Darn. All the way up there in Michigan. My wife and I have a bit of a soft spot for lighty houses, but I guess we can't make that one. If you go, be sure to count the steps!

113. Or was it 114? Darn! Now I'll have to go. I haven't been for a few years. The last time was when my son was 3. He was fine until it was time to come back down the spiral steps. I had to hold his hands and walk down all of them backwards, careful all the way not to bash my head on the steps above me. Talk about a pain in the back!

And actually the light house is in south east Wisconsin. About 45 minutes to an hour north of Chicago (Milwaukee's suburb to the south ). I believe they will be having another tour this fall and I'll do my best to post something early enough so people can make plans if they want.

By the way, I like he avatar you have.

Thank you! Everyone who notices it tells me they have seen the light.

Got a chance to climb the Cape Hatteras light last summer, after the big move back inland away from the ocean. I climbed it as a child back in the 50's; seems strange to have climbed the same lighthouse in TWO different locations! Don

lighthouse in TWO different

I'd suppose that would put you in a rather small group of fortunate people.

I recall seeing bits of a show that explained how they performed the engineering feat of moving a light house without it tipping over. Pretty dicey undertaking if you ask me.

Hope you took pictures from the top.

Yep, that was the Hatteras light. If you glued all my shots from the top together you would have a pan-0-rama of the whole of Hatteras island. Unfortunately it was a hazy day, so I couldn't see Africa... Don

Better peepers than mine

From the Wind Point Lighthouse you can see the 35th richest guy in the country's house. Of course it's only two doors away. But you can't see my house only two blocks away. Not unless you cut down a bunch of trees. But the light does shine in the trees in my back yard at night. "Look! There it goes again!" Every 20 seconds. It's a pretty cool thing but there have been nights I couldn't sleep because the noise from the waves was so loud. Because the water is so shallow (the reason for the lighthouse!) the waves sometimes start to break as much as a 1/2 mile of shore and roll all the way in. It really is quite a racket but soothing at the same time. I'd have a hard time moving someplace else.

soooo cool

Literally! Ever hear a term "cooler near the lake"? Might just be a Great Lakes kind of thing. But there are days when I leave work (30 miles inland) and it is 88 F and I get home and it is 57 F. If you have access to Mapquest type in Racine, WI 53402 and you'll see there is a point out in the water. I live out on the end of that.

Lake Michigan

I went to Navy bootcamp at Great Lakes just south of you. That was the winter (brrrr!) of '71. It was much colder than the two years I spent in Iceland.. Don

Icy land

<Ah yes. Wonderful icy Greenland and green Iceland. Whassup wid dat?!?!>

Blame the Viking travel agency. Since the center of Iceland has Europe's largest glacier, naturally they named the island "Iceland"....

....then they discovered the other island. Well the idea of calling it "Icier-land" wasn't going to encourage settlers to come over, so they called it "Greenland".

....which is why you should never buy a used car from a Norweigian!

So, that explains it. Joe Barker (owner from the lot from which I bought my SVX) was a Norweigian. When he replaced the tranny in my SVX, he couldn't pronounce the word, so, he said "Legacy" instead. Gah!
