Need Help With Parts

Hi, I'm new here, I just bought an SVX. I have had it about a week now.
I knew it had an oil leak when I bought it, it wasn't losing much, but I wanted to bring it to my mechanic to get it looked at. Told him to give the whole car a look.
So today I got the news:
The Valve Cover Gaskets need to be replaced, on both sides.
The Front Caliper Bushing are shot, bolts also need to be replaced.
Outer Tie rod Ends need to be replaced.
Lower ball joints are loose and need to be replaced.
Also time for a new PCV valve, and oil dipstick.

He said other than that, the car seemed to be in good shape.

So after he spent half the day trying to source some caliper bushings, he told me that I would have to bring in all the parts, and they would do the labor.

So, what parts will this job require??
This is my list so far:

Valve covers gaskets - $110 (Both sides)
http://subarupartsforyou.com/cp_part...hp?partid=8419
http://subarupartsforyou.com/cp_part...hp?partid=8420

Front caliper bushings – $31 (both sides)
http://subarupartsforyou.com/cp_part...p?partid=13456

Front Caliper Pins - $32 (both side)
http://subarupartsforyou.com/cp_part...p?partid=12701
http://subarupartsforyou.com/cp_part...p?partid=12702
http://subarupartsforyou.com/cp_part...p?partid=12853

Tie Rods Ends - $80 (both sides)
http://subarupartsforyou.com/cp_part...p?partid=12969

Lower Ball Joints – $160 (both sides)
http://subarupartsforyou.com/cp_part...p?partid=15747

PCV VALVE - $7
http://subarupartsforyou.com/cp_part...p?partid=10299

NEW OIL DIPSTICK (#806908080) = $16
http://subarupartsforyou.com/cp_part...p?partid=10960

WHAT ELSE AM I MISSING???

I saw on the "Valve Cover Gasket" 'how to', that he changed the "oil separator gasket" at the same time. I cannot find these parts or part #'s. Anyone know??

Also, while he is doing this job, is there anything else that you would suggest I have him do at the same time?

Any input on anything would be appreciated.

Re: Need Help With Parts

May want to check your local AutoZone or Advanced Auto for some of these items first. Mainly the suspension parts and PCV valve, you may just need to replace the O-ring on the dipstick too. The caliper pins from a legacy may crossover and be attainable there, wait for someone else to confirm this tho.

How many miles on this SVX , what year and what part of the country do you think it has spent most of its life? If you know.

Re: Need Help With Parts

SilverSpear, Thanks for the link!

I needed gaskets and washers for my spoiler, I couldnt find them on the site.
I got them off that "part lookup" linked site (autocenter) on the subaruparts.com page. Was in the collision repair section.
I decided to buy the pcv valve and the oil dipstick at the same time seeing it didn't raise the shipping price.

I think I got everything and then some. THANKS AGAIN!

Re: Need Help With Parts

$622 in parts. I think I went a bit overboard.
I bought new bolts, nuts, and washers to connect every new piece I bought. I'm sure my mechanic is going to think I'm crazy when I walk in with 100+ pieces.

He said to do the:
Valve Cover Gaskets
Calipers
Ball Joints
Tie Rods

Will be $640/labor. With parts that is just about $1275 Total.

How much extra you think it will be to do the Oil Separator Gasket and PCV valve? The oil separator is right there where he is working, its 3 bolts total each side.

Far as the PCV thing goes, that looked buried in the middle of the engine from the pics in the how to. I handed him the how to writeup and he said, "you got to be kidding me". He seems to think its going to be a pain to get to through that small hole in the top the motor. Is it as bad as it looks?

Also, I seen in the how to do a valve cover gasket change, "Check cams for signs of damage". How likely is it that they will be damaged? Car seems to run fine.

Should I be looking at aftermarket cams since both valve covers are going to be off? In the pics they are right there, or can you not replace them from the side? I'm not a mechanic, I have no idea how they are removed.

I am going to need to do an upgraded output alternator in the near future also, should I do a light weight crank pulley at the same time as that? I read a lot of threads on the pulley discussion. Is their a final verdict on whether or not it is bad for the eg33? I had one on my 2.5RS and it really helped it rev faster.

I have one of them ECUtune stage 1 chips here in a box still, came with the car. It is version 4, is it still worth installing? Its got to be better than stock right? even if its not the newest version. Also, it says N20 on it. Am I understanding correctly that the second map on this chip is for running N20?

She has got almost 190,000k on her, should I just fix her up back to stock and be happy? Would moding her at this point be fatal? I'm not looking to buy a new motor yet, specially after I'm about to drop $1,300 in engine work into her.

Just like before, any info is appreciated.

Re: Need Help With Parts

Previous Owner Did:

2/10
Transmission filter and new line

6/09
Valve Cover Gaskets Replaced
Radiator Replaced with PWR aftermarket
Rebuilt Starter
Timing Belt tentioner and idler replaced
Cam Plugs
Power Steering O-ring
Power Steering Hose

4/09
Changed Rear Clutch Pack Housing
Transmission Mounts Replaced
Timing Belt & Water Pump

I have receipts for all the work on the car. Staggering amount of receipts.

To be honest, I am worried about the Valve Cover Gaskets leaking after only 7months!
I am hoping that they just did a crappy job of it, not looking forward to having to buy new rocker panels, or worse...

It would have been almost as cheap to buy a low mileage JDM engine off Ebay and have it installed.

It is highly unlikely that the cams are damaged and I suspect he will do the seal job with the engine in the car. He will not really be able to tell much about the cams AND definitely would not be able to replace them with the engine in the car. I personally wouldn't put new cams in a high mileage engine without doing additional work.

You are correct, there is no reason why the valve covers should be leaking when already repaired except for a crappy job. It is possible that the cam seals started leaking if the prev owner only did the valve cover gasket job. You can tell if it is this simply by cleaning the engine and valve cover area and then observing for the source of the leak or seep.

Re: Need Help With Parts

what is the part number on the cam seals?

What is there location?

should I have them done at the same time?

and yes, by the time im done with this, I probably could have bought a complete parts car.

Re: Need Help With Parts

Did you check subaruparts again? They should have the cam seals diagram and part number there

And I prefer the route you are taking instead of a used engine/parts car. When you buy something used, it might also be needing new seals and stuff

Personally, I would not replace them now unless they are leaking. The time to do these seals is when you replace the timing belt as you have to remove all the stuff that you remove to do the timing belt as well as the cam sprockets. They are behind the cam sprocket--one on each side.

For future reference the part number is 806732050.

Re: Need Help With Parts

Previous owner records show he did "Cam Plugs" when he did the timing belt tensioner. is that the same thing?

The box of parts got with the car included 2 cam seals and a crank seal that he didn't use. How many cam seals are on the car, 4?

Yeah I was on this page:
http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...ategory=013-A1

But I don't see anything that says Seals or gaskets.
Is it the washer set (part 3)?

These are the Cam Seals that were in the box of parts I got with the car. I looked up the model number on the subaruparts site but its not their part number.

http://www.bestvalueautoparts.com/it...RNLEY&weight=3

It says 1996-1996, is this part even compatible with my 92?

Edit:
lhopp77 thanks for the info and the part number. I didn't see your post until i posted this.
