No power steering

I had stiff low speed steering . I changed the fan belt and it was perfect. ButThis morning I went to drive the car to work and it has no power steering . I checked the steering fluid it was empty . I filled it and it worked for 5 min and all the fluid ended up on the ground under the car back behind the driver side front wheel just below the nos sensor. Did I blow a rack or a seal or a hose . What you think. Local Subi place want $1,060.00 to repair . If the pump is ok. I can't find a seering Rack at a local parts store ... HELP

Re: No power steering

If you're lucky it's just a split low-pressure hose. That's what happened to me. Put some fluid in, run the engine and look carefully where it's spurting out from.

Re: No power steering

It is shooting out all the way to the right way back near the firewall just above the ware that hooks to the NOS sensor... as I said it was working great the day before I just changed a front 1/2 shaft and all the brakes and saw no leaks. I never lost Power steering fluid before. Where do i get the new hose? the fluid is pouring out as fast as i pour it in.

Re: No power steering

if i'm not mistaken the only flexible hoses would be on the passenger side. steel lines go to the pinion housing.maybe a seal on the rack?

Re: No power steering

Is the rack seal replaceable ? Where can I get a new rack? Besides Subaru? Or is there another rack I can use

I had my power steering rack and both hoses replaced months ago. I was out of town, so my dad ended up paying the ~$1000 to fix (at a Nissan dealership). Then I saw a few months ago that there were rebuilt racks for sale, but I can't remember from where. I think it was around $400. Point is, keep looking.

Also, you should try not to drive it without power steering fluid, it can burn up the pump.

Re: No power steering

If you have an LSi or similar model with the leather seats, sunroof, etc. I have a steering rack for the speed sensitive steering. PM me if that is your problem and you are interested. Otherwise, just find where the leak is coming from.

Re: No power steering

I am not sure what rack I need . All I know is the fluid shot out of it as fast as it went in. and it was foaming. Is it hard to change a rack? is it hard to change seals ?

umm, not horrible, but not easy to change out the rack And i'm not sure if the seals are replaceable separate to the rack, I'm sure someone on here should know.

I looked in your profile and you have a 92 and you have it listed as an LSI, but in 92 they actually had LS and LS-L. If your car has the factory sunroof, its an LS-L and would need the rack with the solenoid for the speed sensitive steering.

edit; looks like the seals should be able to be ordered and replaced separately from the diagrams...

Re: No power steering

clean it off, put the car in the air, start it, look for leaks.

If you dont want to do that then start with all new o-rings on all of the pipes (they get brittle and crack/deform) then bleed and test drive.

If your rack is still wet then more than likely it will need to be replaced.

This was the first Google hit I clicked:

That said, I'd bet you got a blown line. Leaking as badly as you describe, it shouldn't be hard to find.

Re: No power steering

dcarrb you win the prize Looking at line # 27 on the diagram. This is a small steel line that runs along the bottom of the rack from one end to the other . Right where it bend up to go to the driver side just above the NOS sensor there is a pin hole . I ordered the line from mother Subaru $17.00.. For now we wrapped a piece of rubber hose around it and squeezed it on with a hose clamp. Got a very slight drip but should hold until i get the part on Monday. My question is have you ever changed this pipe and how in the heck do you get to the fittings on the driver side of the rack? thanks for all your help you guys are great support.

Re: No power steering

I've had a rack changed but deemed this a job best done by my trusted mechanic. Hopefully someone else can offer advice.

Re: No power steering

The rack is GOOD. Steering is back to normal with the hole plugged. just need to change out the rusted pressure line. looks like it is going to be hard to remove one side.
