Whiteline Rear Differential Bushings How To

This is my rear differential bushing mod there are other options and styles as well as complete replacement bushings. I used the Whiteline KDT-903 kit. I had originally hoped it would be a direct drop in fit but it required some modification. I will try to walk through this incase anyone would like to do this on their own.

The kit comes with 4 insert style bushings two large flat washers and some lube for the polyeurethane. Here is a poor quality picture of the instructions hard to see but it validates this kit isn't made for our set up.

This is the rear section of the cross member I am showing it with one of the modified inserts mounted and the first picture I tried to highlight the voids in the original rubber in Blue.

Here is a non highlighted photo closer up.

Here I am showing the modified bushing next to the non modified. I highlighted the cuts I made (side cutters/ dikes worked well) Basically I cut about a 1/4” piece off each side of the wide flange then cut an angle piece off so the outcome was tapered. The one I show pre-cut in the picture has a center portion cut this was not required (I didn't cut the center on the second) they are a tight fit so my cuts are only a guide I would recommend someone else verify what cuts they feel would be required. On the smaller flanges I just cut an angle to taper the ends so they would slide into place easier.

Once they are cut I pressed them in and then used a rubber mallet and tapped them tightly in place. For final fitment I would recommend using the lube provided.

The final step would be to mount the washers and put the nut back on the differential mounting bolt (not shown).

Re: Whiteline Rear Differential Bushings How To

Yes you have two bushings left over they will be used for the differential top cross over mount. This mount isn't easy to remove I have one side off and hoping to let some lube sit over night before getting the other side off (unless I find my steering wheel puller grrr).
Ok for this section I want to reference the thread by Turn In Concepts (TiC) group on suspension bushings. In the thread they refer to the Kart Boy bushings.
http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...ght=suspension
Here I have the top plate with rubber and the cross member coming off the mounting stud

They didn't get to replacing the the top diff cross member bushing but suggested one from their kit. While I think that would take up the empty space the remaining two from the kit I am using will not only tighten up the empty space but will also act to fill in the voids in the original rubber bushing.

Here is the modified bushing next to the unmodified. I cut the two smaller tabs off no other modification was required.

Install bushing (rubber mallet helps)

For the bottom bushing I am going to go with the TiC lower bushing suggestion. Though I am using Whiteline bushing set KSB751 the Small Thick bushing.

It is a tight fit because my top is a bit thicker but when you do get the nut on it tightens up nicely.

The other side is the same.

Sowise,
Nice post! Just an FYI. What you've done with the Whiteline pieces has previously been done by SVXFiles using readily available steering bushing kits from Advance Auto (aka the 15$/15min mod) and by multiple folks using custom solid urethane diff bushing (yes, the Whiteline approach is easier, as you don't have to pull the old bushings out. I'd just question if the end result is as effective). You can see examples of both mods in TOMSSVX's thread where he's upgrading Dan's entire suspension (it also has Whiteline lateral links)
Take care!

Thanks, Yes I have seen the 15$/15min mod and it is a great cheap alternative it is a rubber bushing though and my preference is for polyeurethane, I also like the fact that it fills in (if only partially) the voids in the rubber bushing.
As for the differential mounts yes I have seen the ones in Toms thread and I like them but like you said you don't have to pull the old bushings out. I did look at other alternatives but wanted to give these a try. TiC has another set up that looks promising as well

I can't say yet if there is any improvement, I believe there will be but wouldn't say it would be as good as the full replacements that Tom used I believe those were the Earthworm bushings. I don't know if he is still selling them but have seen or heard others who are interested but haven't been able to get in contact with him.
All in all regardless of what people go with or use this is just another option.

Re: Whiteline Rear Differential Bushings How To

Sorry to pull this back up, but can someone direct me to TomsSvx suspension upgrade of Dan's car referenced in this thread? I've searched and searched , but can't find it.
Also, are oem diff bushings no longer available?
Thanks.

Re: Whiteline Rear Differential Bushings How To

Thanks guys. I am glad to hear that the original bushings are still available.
I had previously seen the 15 min mod, but from the language of the post about Tomssvx thread, I thought his thread would be about replacing the bushings on the entire suspension, not just buttressing the rear cross member. Maybe that is why I have not been able to find it.

Is that for the pair or for just the right (R) one? From the pictures up top, the two look to be different.

Edit: nope, that's just me looking at the pre- and post-modded whineline inserts.
