Re: EGR What is it? How hard to replace.

Damn code 34 came back again. It doesn't seem to effect drivability but there must be something out of whack.

Re: EGR What is it? How hard to replace.

Something you can check thats easy, I also had a cel 34, don't have clue where the egr soleiniod is but there is a small vacume line right under the intake in front of power steering pump, you can see it easily and with small fingers you can push on it. Mine is lose fitting on its position and has some oil on it, I pushed it on tighter and cel is off, maybe a small clamp would help????.............G

That's not too surprising Sean.

The 34 code shows there is something wrong with the EGR solenoid circuit. A few things could be wrong, but as the code is displaying because of an electrical anomaly, there are two primary things to check; the actual solenoid could be conked out or the other possibility would be the EGR valve itself is stuck, and the solenoid is unable to move it.

The first thing I would try is the clean gunge from the actual EGR valve. As longass says you have to carefully take off the manifold to get near the thing. It might be a very good start to use a can of Sea Foam or other engine cleaner through the intake. This might dissolve out sticky deposits from the valve.

If doing that did not keep your code away you might need to lift the manifold, possibly dismount and clean the valve [and vacuum lines], possibly replace the solenoid. Clean the thing as much as possible in situ first though before you go to that trouble. At least I would.

Re: EGR What is it? How hard to replace.

What would happen if I continued to drive around with a EGR soleniod problem? Would it contribute to cold engine stalling or anything like that? The repair sounds a bit above my skill level, as I have never taken off the manifold before.

Re: EGR What is it? How hard to replace.

Why not use one or two cans of Sea Foam? See if it frees up the EGR valve?

Re: EGR What is it? How hard to replace.

Ok I'll try that this weekend, but forgive me my ignorance, how would I apply the sea foam in this situation?

I'm assuming he means the Check valve. It's a U shaped hose on the bottom right of the power steering pump.

Re: EGR What is it? How hard to replace.

I know my PVC check valve was recently replaced so I don't think that is my issue.

Instructions should be on the can Sean.

We use a different product over here but I suspect the principle of application is the same. You insert the capillary tube nozzle into the air intake AFTER the MAF. Not before the MAF, it can do damage to it.

The procedure is to have a friend rev the engine while you are spraying the foam, you spray for 10 or 20 minutes. Follow the can instructions.

The IAC or Idler Air Control valve is a different thing. If it were gunged up you would be getting bad idle, possibly no code. Your code 34 indicates EGR valve circuit or solenoid. The Sea Foam may free the EGR valve if a stuck valve or clogged vacuum line is causing your problem. If it does not cure the code you will be faced with opening up the manifold.

Do you want a scan of the Code 34 troubleshoot page?

Joe

Just to be clear here, the u shaped hose is not connected any way to the power steering pump itself but is behind the pump under the manifold?? Whats the check valve do?..........G

Re: EGR What is it? How hard to replace.

I know it's located by the power steering. The check valve has someting to do with vacuum that's all I can think of.

Re: EGR What is it? How hard to replace.

Thank you, I was thinking maybe the check valve was somehow connected into the vacume system therefor effecting egr soleiniod vacume? Maybe others know these tidbits of vacume, my cel is still off, by for now.......G

Re: EGR What is it? How hard to replace.

Where is the EGR soleniod located? I don't see a EGR soleniod on the Subaruparts.com diagram, is it inside another part assembly? Just wondering.
