crank pulley starter trick ?

do the fans have to be connected for the motor to bump over?

im pulling everything to replace the timing belt and ive gotten to the crank pulley

well i'd already read about the methods to break it loose and i'd chosen on the starter one

only, turning the car over produced a click - and the check engine idiot indicator clicks rapidly in time to a relay...?

what gives, it cranked over just fine with everything connected...

but with the radiator out [w/fans] and a few other things undone it just clicks and won't turn over...

both sides of the battery are secure - but she wont actually bump over and break the bolt loose

any ideas?

Don't know why it won't turn over, but you can run a jumper wire from the big starter wire to the small one that plugs on to the solenoid near it. Just touch it and the starter will run.

why did you remove the radiator to do a timing belt?

having the radiator out gives me more room to roam, i like tight spaces, but if we go down that route we certainly aren't talking about my car anymore

so, the radiator is out, the screwdriver trick worked and off came my pulley and covers...

this is what was within

dude i have no idea - i was driving along, minding my own business... ipod grooving some elvis costello

check engine light pulsed a few times and click, the car was off

i pulled over to the side and knowing that im sitting on a non interference motor i crank her over a few times... nothing...

not much i could do from the side of the road - had it towed to the closest repair shop only to hear it's my timing belt and that it'll be around $1700

well that isnt going to happen...

so home she comes and i start pulling her apart... after getting the covers off - that's what i found!

im going to need a passenger side backing cover because that got ate a little - and of course new cover seals all around...

ive already got a new water pump and timing kit - the idlers and pulleys in there actually look good, they just have belt residue on them, but ill use new parts just cause i have them...

all in all it's not too bad

just have to find that backing cover and some seals

any ideas?

Re: crank pulley starter trick ?

I just replaced one of my timing covers(behind timing belt) and a camshaft plug 2 weeks ago. It's not that bad of a job just time consuming. I would also check your cam seals and plugs for leaks because they are less that 5$ and now would be the time to change them.

Re: crank pulley starter trick ?

Sounds like you have a dead battery.

Also, you should disconnect the negative terminal (or both) whenever you start tearing into things.

Re: crank pulley starter trick ?

inspect all of those idlers to be sure it wasn't one of those that seized and burned up the belt... Otherwise my guess is a seized water pump... which made it a good decision to remove the radiator after all

Re: crank pulley starter trick ?

the batt is all disconnected - all the idlers [smooth, geared, water pump, and tensioner] all turn smoothly

but i have a timing kit which came with all new parts, i have a rebuilt water pump too

so im going to replace all that as well...

my concern is the right side timing cover, it got ate in the party that happened in there, finding one in good shape appears to be harder than popping down to the local parts store

i also dont really want to remove the cam pulley

things are amazingly clean in there, after i blew out all the dust and debris from the belt, that part of the engine is spic and span, no oil, no rust, nothing
