Re: What would it take to go 4.44 back to stock?
Well I find it surprising that no one up here has even given it any thought really... I thought maybe people would want to do it, as I thought having 4.44's was something desirable. But from the speed this thread is moving, I guess it really isnt. I would meet up with Zandar, but that is just too far of a drive for me, and neither of us know anyone with the knowledge of doing the swap. Guess I may be out of luck with this one

Re: What would it take to go 4.44 back to stock?
I would be up for this if you'd want. I'm in Iowa, granted but... I dunno. I actually have a 4.11 tranny that I'm going to put in but I'm still in need of the rearend, and if I'm not mistaken yours would work.
If you'd really like, I could ship you my tranny and stock rearend, but I'd still need your rearend, and you coudl even keep your tranny and maybe sell it? I dunno, just let me know what you think. I don't drive my car everyday, so this wouldn't really be a problem for me in regards to waiting. Also, I can just go ahead and put my tranny in and just run in FWD mode until I'd get your rearend. Anyway, no hurry on my end, but if you're interested just give me a holler. Also, you'd still need someone to do the work and what-have-you.

Re: What would it take to go 4.44 back to stock?
How many miles are on the stock tranny that you have? Also, what all would you need when you say rear end, just the rear diff? This is something that could be worked out, though shipping on your end would be spendy...

Re: What would it take to go 4.44 back to stock?
The tranny has 119k on it, but so far for me has been flawless. For the last 5k or so it has had a smallcar shiftkit on it, but a year ago when I got the car the first thing I did was flush the tranny and fill it with Amsoil synthetic. However, previous owners' records had indicated regular filter and fluid changes. When I flushed the tranny at our shop, the fluid was rather clean, indicating a fairly healthy trans.
Even in my own experiences, Amsoil has proven itself time and time again on my own cars to give long life to notoriously "unreliable" trannies. As far parts, yes all I'd really need is the rear-end, but now that I think about it, it would be nice to have a spare tranny as well. It would be nice to have your tranny as well as rear-end. That way, the shipping is basically even on both sides, and reimbursing and whatnot could more or less be over-looked. Just let me know what you think. Either way is fine by me, and I'm not in a hurry whatsoever, but I was planning on swapping my tranny out this summer anyway to put in the 4.11. May as well go 4.44's while I'm at it, eh?

Re: What would it take to go 4.44 back to stock?
Well I would still be fine with that, and the mileage was around what I was looking for. The tranny I have is in perfect shape, I just dont need the extra kick in power, lol. How would you ship something like that? Wonder how much it would cost. Also, I dont really know anyone who can help me with this, and I have never done something like this on my own... Can a noobie tackle this task? Or does it have to be done by someone who knows how to do it? Would anyone local-ish to me be able to help? I dont have much money... but I can do what I can.
This sounds like it could go somewhere, only issue on my end is that I cant be without my car for more than a couple days at max. Its my only way to get to work, so shipping the trannys out at the exact same time would prolly not work for me. I dont know how you would want to go about doing it... -Dennis

Re: What would it take to go 4.44 back to stock?
Well, it's not like we'd have to ship them at the same time. I could easily ship mine first and send you the parts you'd need and then you ship me yours when you are ready. However, I would expect mine to be back to me within say... 2 weeks of you getting yours. Just because I'm in no hurry doesn't mean I want my car to just sit there tranny-less. lol
It's not something EASILY done by the first-timer, but it's not exactly difficult either. It can be done by anyone mechanically minded with enough patience and competence. Also having the right tools will help. It would be best to have it shipped on a pallet by a freight company. You could even use the pallet I would send you, and just arrange for the same company to ship it back to me. You just figure out what works for you. Like I said, I'm up for whatever, and will help you out if this is something you decide on. p.s. Shipping would probably be in the neighborhood of $150 for freight.

Re: What would it take to go 4.44 back to stock?
Well this sounds good to me, is there is a how to on the tranny swap somewhere? That would make life eaiser on my end by far. And I would have the tranny back instantly once I got yours swapped in. Im an honest guy, and will do everything I can to make the switch go as smoothly as possible.

Re: What would it take to go 4.44 back to stock?
Well, it helps tremendously if you have a lift to do it on. However, the EASIEST (not necessarily the cheapest) way to do it would just be to take it to a shop and have them do it. This would also easily insure it could be done quickly.
Something like this for me I would expect to spend 4 or 5 hours on, taking my time. But that's with air tools, a lift, and no big rush. For the first timer in say... a driveway, I would expect it would take all day. Not sure on a how-to though, maybe you could ask one of the Tom's and see if they have any tips or write-ups. I'd take pictures of when I do it, but then that wouldn't help YOU much. lol Also, why don't we just take this to emails so we don't take up room on the board. nevinbontrager@gmail.com is me. Thanks!
