transmission options

Since my SVX is currently not roadworthy (bum transmission) I would like to hear everyone's transmission options put forth, and I thought it would be cool to have them all in one thread with approximate cost and where to get the unit/have it done. Ideally, I would retrofit to a new style 4eat or a 5eat.

the retrofit to a newer 4eat or 5eat is going to be a wiring nightmare, but if you are up to the task, it is ideally the best trans for the car because they are equipped with Variable transfer drum?? VTD it acts similar to our clutch transfer but they will lean to a rear wheel bias as opposed to front and their action is mostly mechanical and not all laid on clutches like ours is. They tend to be heavy on the pocket too... Saw a couple 5eat's on ebay going for well over $1000

Ditto what Tom says. Every time I get into the Forester I'm surprised how much more power it puts to the rear compared to the SVX. The forester can break loose far more easily in the snow than my car. Although if the SVX is running on fumes it's almost as quick to get tail happy.

My personal choise, if money is no object, is the JDM Forester STi 6MT. It's got the tallest gears of all the MT's (60 MPH in a Forester STi happens at ~2150 RPM), has the 65% rear wheel torque bias that the 6MT's share, and of course, has 6 gears. THis option is mucho expensive, obviously. I can get a JDM STi 6MT from a guy on Montreal for $3800 Can. I don't know if he can get the Forester trans though.

Phase 2 4eat ?'s

Money is an object, and I don't want to go with a manual because I don't think there is an adequate setup, at least not that I have seen. I don't want to add any more problems to a car that is already as maintinence intensive as SVXs are. I would like to have a transmission that isn't subject to the major design flaws that The first gen 4eat. This is why they completely started over when they made the new one, which I would really like to get put in the car. I believe the most likely way that it would go would be an addition of a donor ECU and complete harness which i would dissasemble and pick out only the transmission wires and just run them, leaving the unused factory harness. I do not know, however, what all would be involved in mounting. Does anyone know if the length of the new 4eat is different overall, and what modification would be required to bolt it up to the engine/flexplate?

it would bolt up no problem using the torque converter and flex plate from the donor. They are different lengths and I am sure a new X-member would need to be made to work and a lengthened driveshaft made. Only problem is, these transmissions were made to communicate with OBDII ECUs which may cause a problem with communications. There is a wiring mess to be dealt with which is the only major concern and hold back from me doing right now... I am working with another member on getting a trans and most of the wiring. i have offered to do my best at trying to make it work on her car but there is no promise that it will work. It is definitely probable if that makes you feel any more confident

BTW the 5 speeds available now are great matches for the car. the newer wrx 5mt's and 6mt's have great ratios which match the car's power and performance perfectly. But hey, not gonna make you do it

I need to drive one that is a 5 speed, I suppose. I don't see how you could run it on the stock ECU though, because the engine would face loads that I would imagine are off the map on an ECU set up for an automatic, it seems that i remember that people were having stalling issues... I am also concerned about the clutch setup, etc... all of which have to be rigged. I suppose it would be easier than the new 4eat, but I don't know. Hopefully the new OBD II 4eat would run off the TCU without engine input, if it will, then the wiring would be as easy as adding the harness from the donor car, but i doubt it is that easy.

The real answer would be to figure out how to mod the car to accept a toyota/aisin transmisson.

you could get 4.11 or 4.44 gears for less than 1000$
