Rear sub-frame questions

I was wondering if there was anyway to pull the rear sub-frame, axle's, diff. out in, more or less one piece. i'm looking at buying an AWD svx for parts and I was thinking for ease of re-assembly is there any way to take the whole rear assembly out and basically bolt it under mine. i have no idea what an AWD looks like underneath as there arn't many SVX's around to take a glance at here in Iowa, and since mine is unfortunatly FWD I have nothing but swing arms and bearings out back to look at. Anyways what other challanges are there in swapping out to AWD. I know i'm in for swapping out another tranny but will my fwd axleswork with the AWD tranny. How about the rear brakes and hubs, will i just have to take the ones from the awd? I was also thinking about putting a manual 5 in at some point, when I find the right parts car. What years are the best swap, Is there a parts car that would be better to buy for the 5-speed/AWD swap that would gain more usable parts in the long run than another SVX? Or is buying another SVX mandtory to any SVX owner? I know there kind of addicting and costs me alot more than my wife does, but my wife also dosn't understand the feeling deep in your gut you get from drive an SVX. Anyways there just another notch in Subaru's belt.
Thanks for the help and advice.
Will

Nope

It is not a rear assembly that can simply be removed and bolted to another car, but several separate components. Even with this, it might not be a huge task. Brakes--depends on whether your FWD has ABS brakes or not. If it has ABS brakes--not much of a problem and no need to swap AWD wheel assemblies. If it does not have ABS brakes then you will have more problems converting. Your front axle shafts will fit and they are actually stronger than AWD shafts. Of course you will also have to swap the TCU and ECU.

A couple members here have made the conversion and you might search for their comments on the procedure.

You will all so need to swich the fuel tank.
From only looking at the parts brake down it looks like you could just unbolt the rear sub frame, struts, and posable the rear traling links and then disconnect the brake lines and drive shaft.

You need to switch the fuel tanks? Hmm, I've never heard of that before. Are the FWD and AWD tanks different shapes?

Not having done this swap, I can't say what to get from the donor car. I CAN say that you'll be WAY ahead if you can buy a donor, and have it handy when doing the swap. Otherwise, you'll find yourself going back & forth buying more stuff off the donor. God only knows how many little clips & tabs you'll need. All of them can be a few steps away, or across town.
The sanity you save, may be your own.

I was going to buy an SVX parts car because its got a good motor and i guess it drives so theres two of the more expensive parts of the car i'll have covered, and even if the awd parts cars tranny is shot, i'll be looking for a 5 speed just a little sooner than the wife planed. I also didn't know what other parts cars are good to get for the 5 speed. i know theres a few earlier 80's subaru's in a junk yard near where i live that have 5 speeds in them but i suppose the trannys i'll be needing will have to come form the VG motors.
Sorry, I might not know what the hell i'm talking about as my SVX is the first Subaru i've ever owned and before i fell in love with it i was all about 1980's 300ZX's and old muscle cars so alot of the SVX is far beyond my capability, but I sucessfully swaped trannys without ever working on a subaru before and only owning it for a month before i had to do it.

Drop a PM to TOMSSVX, he did this exact swap around a year ago on MikeCG's car.

Short answer...It all prettymuch comes out in one piece. Undo the strut tops from inside the car (You'll need to remove the rear seats and rear deck) make sure the brake lines are unhooked, unbolt the driveshaft, and finally get the large subframe bolts undone, and voilas...done deal

You are form Iowa? Hot dog! I never thought I'd see the day when another person from our fair state posted!

You can take a look at my car for pointers if you like. It's AWD, and I'd be willing to help turn a wrench if need be!

Welcome, and my name's nevin by the way. Duhr... *points to screenname*

You need to drop a number of things out of the way first (exhaust, parking brake cables, draive shaft, upper strut mounts) but once those are clear the entire rear subframe with rear diff will drop out of the car. Beware, the subframe mounting bolts are big long and probably well rusted in place (think big pipe here).

Have fun!

actually it is fairly straight forward.

1. Drop the exhaust out of the way.
2. Disconnect the brake lines from the car.
3. Disconnect the ABS wheel sensors from the car (under the rear seat)
4. Disconnect the parking brake cables from the car (under the center console)
5. Drop all the supporting hardware from the subframe brackets first
6. Use a tall jack or two jacks to support the subframe
7. Disconnect the top strut mounts from the body.
8. Using an impact gun drop the four main supports for the subframe
9. Lower it down (while doing this, be sure there is nothing still connected to the car).
10. You have a subframe on the floor, reverse procedure for install

I'll be sure to take lots of pics and share my experiances with all interested. Hey Nevin maybe when the weather warms up i'll have to take a road trip to the cheese factory and stop in and check out your SVX.

Sounds good to me, Will! Come on down, we can turn some wrenches at the shop, use the lift, do whatever! Hey, I may be planning to go to Hangover Fest at Cordova on the 1st. Interested in coming??
