EG33 Electronis question

I've been having intermediate problems with FrankenWedge…
My EG33 powered XT6

3 times now out of the blue, it just won’t start, it’ll crank fine, but doesn’t start.
It will usually start up eventually, sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes a little longer, but I drove it the other day, and it started fine in the morning, and fine when I left work, but I went to move it a couple hours later, and it wouldn’t start, and hasn’t since (Though I haven’t really tried for a few days now)
It acts like it’s not getting fire to the plugs, but it’s not that easy to check for spark, when you don’t have plug wires… , and it’s a pain to pull one of the coils off to check for fire (yeah, I’m being lazy)

It acts like our old OBS did when it had a Crank position sensor going bad….so some of you more electronically minded folk, give me some direction…does it sould likely to be a Crank or Cam Position Sensor?

Oh yeah, I have no way to check for codes on it since the swap...as the CEL isn't wired to the EG33's ECU, nor do I have the connectors to hook it up to a scan tool....

I do have a spare EG33 to pull parts from though….

Try replaciong them temp sensor. May be the reason it will start cold and not warm

It won't even start cold now...., but I'll look at the temp sensor too....

I would put my money on crank or cam position sensor, too. I can't imagine that all of the coils are bad that it won't turn over at all. Does it crank strong?

Yeah, it cranks fine as long as I keep the battery charged....

But doesn't even try to hit...so it either isn't getting fuel, or it isn't getting spark....I can hear th efuel pump cycling, so I'm going with "No Spark"

Maybe you have a faulty ignitor?? That or the crank sensor would be my best guess. I am sure you have both laying around

I don't know if I have a spare igniter laying around for the SVX, so I'll try the Crank PS first, then the Cam PS, hopefully it'll be one of those, and the alternator sits right down on the crank position sesnor, as I had to lower the alt some due to hood clearance issues...so i'm betting that the problem, now that I think about it...
I may have to re-locate the alternator to under the engine, not something I wanted to do....

Cars will start and run without cam sensors (of course there's probably one that doesn't..) Cam sensors only exist for synchronizing injection firing to individual cylinders. When they go hooters up the ECU just uses its best guess and fires the injectors in two banks instead of sequentially.

No modern car will do a thing without a crank signal. But before you get carried away, you have to check for switching at least at one injector and at one coil. When the ignition is on (KOEO & KOER - key on, engine off & key on, engine running) battery power is present at each injector and at each coil. Coils and injectors (and most all output devices on computer control cars) are ground switched. Think of it this way, if something was power-side switched and shorted to ground it could wipe out the computer. If the ground-side switched circuit shorts to ground, so what? Back to task - so you'll need to use a test light, lead to ground at first to check for power at a coil and a injector. If you have power at each with the ignition on, you're good so far. Now move the test light lead to the positive battery terminal and probe the other wire at an injector and a coil while someone cranks the engine. The light will flicker, faintly and fast (think 3.5 - 10 milliseconds. your eye can see that fast but may have trouble discerning in bright areas.)

No switching at either injector or coil? Probably crank sensor (CKP) or ECU, but in your case, since cranking and twisting old harnesses around, you may have a poor connection or broken wire. Let me know if you need additional help. If the coil has switching but not the injector, or vice-versa, the crank sensor and its circuitry is o.k. but you'll need to let me know and we'll go from here.

i had the same problem a while ago, before you get too serious about a big problem check all the grounds for your electronics. i dont know how you wired yours, but on the svx there is a ground on the back of the intake manifold on the pass side, basically a bolt goes through a connector on a ground wire that splits off into a few ground wires and my bolt came loose.

Thanks for the ideals and procedure Beav (and others) I haven't had the chance to check into it yet, as we've been painting my daughters room (honey do list ) but will try to check these things out as soon as I get around to it, at least I have some fresh ideals to start with when I get to it...

OK guys it was the Crank position sensor, the one that the alternator hits...the locking clip has been broken off (by the alternator hitting it) and had com un-hooked, plugged it back in, and all's well
I love an easy fix
