New tranny proble to me

I just drained and filled my tranny fluid the other weekend. I am running a 96 Impreza 4EAT. To night when I was driving home the RPM's reved up and then it shifted into the next gear with a cherp, like tire type cherp. I think it shifted into 3rd, not 100% sure. I went to check the fluid level and it looks like it is over filled.

How bad did or could I have hurt the tranny.

Next I was checking for any sign of leaking when I was a pool of tranny fluid sitting on the pass sid of the tranny, see pic one & pic two

What is this thing and why would there be fluid pooled on it.

The shot is of my origional tranny, broke that one too

HELP PLEASE

Steve

Steve,
My guess is that ATF "burped" out of the two vent tubes at the top of the trans and drained back down the housing. I don't think you've done any permanent damage to the trans - just make sure to measure the level after you've driven it a while and make sure the ATF is at the correct level. Too much ATF in the trans can result in a foaming action, which isn't good.
-Bill
p.s. how many miles are on the trans and when was the last time the brake band was adjusted?
p.p.s you might also want to check the TPS voltage to make sure it's at .5V

Thanks Bill,
It has been about 4 months from my last band brake adjustment.
As far as the TPS I will do that this weekend of tonight if my garage temp stays above 15 deg it is not to bad.

Not used to this cold yet. 1st winter here, I wand to live in Maryland again.

So check the level properly. Normally you just replace the same amount of fluid you drained.

OK I checked the TPS and is was reading 5 volts per the manual. Adjusted it for idle, after the car warmed up, to about 750 rpm's.
Tranny fluid was drained and refilled to the stick level. It only took 5 quarts. book calls for 8.4 qts. Took the car for a drive.
I thought that I was riding a bull when she tried to lock up in 4th. The car gerked and bucked somthing bad. Now there is slipping in 3rd and 4th. 40mph at 4 grand.
Could the tranny dip stick be wrong? or the dip stick behind the tranny?
Could the tranny be going bad?
I am going to adjust the band brake in the hope that it will help.

All advise welcome.

Steve

When you do the drain and refill your not going to get all of the fluid out. Getting 5 qts out is pretty good. If you want to make sure its all good then over the next few weeks or something just drain and re fill a few times. That will ensure most of the fluid is good.

Steve,
I hope this was a typo and you meant to type .5VDC, not 5VDC.....
40 mph at 4 grand doesn't sound right at all, even with 4.11 gears...
What was the outside temp when you took it out? If it is as cold as I think it is where you're at, I'm surprised the trans even got warm enough for the TC to lock up...

Bill I did say 5 volts dc. That is what my chart from SOA has at the ECU conection B60 terminal 3. Were did you get .5volts. I am very interested in this. This is the least of my problems now. 3th and 4th are gone.
Talked with svxfiles today and came to the conclusion that the tranny is dieing. Funeral services will be later this week. Burial is slated for January 29th. I think the overfilling helped it out.
I will take pic again for this will be the last tranny I am aloud to replace in her. Per my wife.

P.S.

The tranny did reach operating temp of 180 deg. Installed a tranny temp gauge today to help trouble shot. It took about 10 minutes in temps around 20 deg. It was pretty warm today.

Sorry to hear about your tranny problems Steve. If this is the last time you can replace the trans, then go for broke and find a nice low-mileage unit from a pre '99 Impreza.

Thanks Chike. I have found a 40k 96 out of a Legacy. tranny numbers match. They are asking $950 but I will try to get them to come down.
Last tranny change because of new baby coming next month. Wife is very money minded. Does not like to spend mony on used cars. That is why she has a $500 a month car payment. Mine is paid for.

BTW cool pics of you and yours in the snow. We got some snow too but I took a better shot.

Keep warm
Steve

p.s. I will have to take snow pics now thanks

-14 is nothing.

I don't know if my camera would work at this temperature but I saw -38°C flashing in the SVX.

Shizz Dave, -38C, how do you handle that cold! Its in the +35C here, with summer rain, 30cm in the last few days.

<<Tranny fluid was drained and refilled to the stick level. It only took 5 quarts>>

are you checking the level when the car is running or off?

<<Installed a tranny temp gauge today to help trouble shot. >>

where did you put the sensor for the temp gauge?
