got a new laptop and...

thinking of getting rid of my desktop. Anybody make such a switch? Can't say as I'm as happy about the keyboard, but the machine and screen are great.

Make & Model is Gateway M675XL w/3.4GHz Pentium 4 and 1680X1050 LCD screen. It's a big sucker for a laptop, but it has pretty much current technolgy - so it may not be obsolete in the next 6 months.

when we finally purchased our first laptop, we pretty much stop using the desktop. basically it is only used now to connect our wireless hub. we will be buying another laptop in the near future.

Just get yourself a generic USB docking station or a USB keyboard. Problem solved. I still plan on staying with a desktop when I get a new one, as it's one less thing my kids can hide or break easily.

I have a Athlon 64 bit with a gig of RAM laptop running as my server at home (holding my emails, web space and domains).

I am using a Fujitsu P7000 series laptop my personal machine.

I used to have a dual xenon IBM machine as my server.

I couldn't live without a desktop, LCD screens drive me crazy, so I don't like to use them unless I have to.

Plus i'd never trust a Gateway as my ONLY computer.

Laptop/Keyboard

Hi Lee, If you don't have, get "Bluetooth" your keyboard/mouse, printer, etc can all run through this wireless connection. "Hot spots" are going to be popping up all over the country. We have one laptop in the family. I don't think a laptop can completly replace a desk top. If you have a lot of data/files stored I don't think you should be carrying around stuff like that. It seems to me that you should just have the information you need in your laptop on an as needed basis. Take care, BOBB

P/S Its like a drive through liqueur store. You can have them but is it a good idea. "B"

I've had plenty of experience with PCs of all types, and Gateways were no more of a problem than any other brand. The only one I ever had chronic problems with was Packard Bell.

I'm talking entire networks of HPs, Gateways and other brands.

Packard hells were bad. I'd seen 3 of the same machines with different internal parts made by a ton of different people.

Gateways are ok. Never had any issues. I personally build my own machine (such as my HTPC). Laptop wise, IBMs are great. I'd avoid emachines (gateway). The funny thing is that Gateways laptops are good but same machine with e-machine brands are really bad.

Alienware! Or if you're looking for durability, look into a Panasonic Toughbook . Also, the Toughbook Model 29 would be the one to get

When I started at Nabisco, our entire northeast logistics network was using gateway workstations. I spent last summer setting up our new IBM servers, because we were the last division to get the green light to ditch our old systems. My boss managed to talk his DM into authorizing new workstations for the area warehouses (includes about 60 units), and since he replaced his own home computer with a Dell, he thought it would be nice to do the same for our entire network. Until he learned how much it would cost. After some finagling and removal of unneeded accessories, we made the cost work, and now we are running all Dell workstations. You would not believe the calls of thanks I got from secretaries and even moreso the old warehouse guys who couldn't stand the gateways always breaking down. I have two friends that are still stuck on gateway (I've gotten all my other friends off of Gateway and into either Dell, or one of my own builds), and I have given up replacing stuff for the gateway systems. I just tell them now, "why don't you call that great tech support Gateway always brags about?". They never get anywhere with the tech support guys, then they call me.

Gateway is crap. Was, is, and looks like it always will be. I'm sure their laptops aren't so bad, because the nature of a laptop forces them to stick with certain components and not low-bid everything, but i'd still NEVER trust a Gateway as my ONLY computer. Not that Gateway is the worst, or only crap company out there, believe me there are lots, but they are up there on the list. They have no standards, just whoever provides the cheapest stuff.

Packard Bell doesn't even deserve to be mentioned here.

Alienware is badass. WAY TOO expensive though.

Thinkpads are always reliable, always use the right components and are easy to fix (from IT stand point). I am not a big fan of alienware. They are great for gaming and such... if I want a gaming machine, I'd build one. I don't really need a protable gaming machine... I guess it all depends on you.

I ran a PowerBook G4 Titanium for 4 years. It finally gave up a few months ago. It was a wonderful computer that tolerated my abuse. I really feel i got my $2600 worth out of it.
